    Chapter 1

Rubbing the back of his hand across the frosted glass, Eddie stared out of his car window. Quickly the brunette returned his hand to the steering wheel. The dew overnight left the roads streaked with ice in the early October morning. Eddie’s green eyes glanced around in search of a parking spot in the high school’s lot. He was running late, so he had to find a place quickly.

He circled around the outside lane in his early morning search. Most of the cars were owned by faculty or the older students. Eddie was only a sophomore. Turning the steering wheel, he pulled into a stall in the row second from the end. Grabbing his bag from the front seat with one hand, he pushed open his driver side door with his other hand. Walking quickly across the parking lot, his ruddy skin turned brighter red from the cold air.

It wasn’t long before Eddie stepped from the parking lot onto the stone courtyard. It was on the quadrant of ground left behind by the gymnasium beyond it and the main school building to the right of it. Eddie followed the other students inside of the main building as the sky turned dark.

    Hey Eddie.

Turning his head, the Eddie looked straight down the hallway at the boy who spoke. Hey Ricky, he replied. With a wave, he hurried to the cluster of lockers outside of his homeroom class.

You’re late, Ricky said. Folding his arms across his chest, the dark featured teen watched his friend closely. They were just two inches apart in height and about the same age. Both were dressed in the school uniform of a green blazer over black pants.

I know. I ran out of gas and had to get some on the way in.

Did you get the homework done?

Yeah, Eddie replied. Sighing faintly, he pulled his locker open. Shoving his backpack inside, he followed it with his jacket. Did you?

Nodding, Ricky turned his brown eyes down the hallway. Yes, the first class is easy.

You’re worried about Gym again, aren’t you?

Sighing, Ricky yanked his books out of his locker. Is it that obvious?

A little bit, Eddie replied. Grabbing his books, he closed his locker door. Is Rocky still bullying you?

No and neither are his friends.

    That’s good.

I guess. Shrugging, Ricky walked with his friend as they enter the classroom. There were only fifteen students in this class. Without assigned seats, the pair sat in their pick of the seats. They were across from each other on the far side of the room.

Good morning everyone, said the teacher. Mrs. Morris was a blonde women with hair pulled back into a no-nonsense ponytail. Her height was on the taller side at five foot ten inches. She glanced around with her blue eyes as she spoke. Now I know that you were looking forwards to a field trip, but with the weather report of freezing rain we won’t be able to do it.

Eddie groaned along with the other students in the class. While going out in the cold wouldn’t be pleasant, field trips were always a welcome alternative to the classroom experience. Shaking his head, Eddie murmured, Wonder what we’re doing instead.

Instead we will watch movies in the assembly room. Mrs. Morris chuckled at the round of weak cheers. So everyone grab your chair and bring it along.

Standing, Eddie picked up his chair. Along with the other students, he walked out of the classroom and down
