Introduction

Dinner is usually the major meal of the day. But it seems to carry a much larger social significance. Dinner brings the family together at the end of a long day. We discuss the day's events over a hot meal, trade stories and bond with our kin.

Dinner can be used as a way of solidifying new relationships. How many times have we invited new friends over to share a meal?  It's no coincidence that most romantic relationships start with a dinner date. Even people in business conduct meetings and combine work with fine dining. Clearly, it's a major part of our lives.

So it's sad that the art of creating a nice, home cooked meal seems to be on the decline. Many children now grow up in homes where neither parent cooks on a regular basis. Aside from the health issues that arise with a diet of fast food, frozen microwave meals and the like, frequently families that don't cook on a regular basis miss out of that crucial bonding experience that comes with making and sharing a meal together.

So this book is written with the hope that it will help to inspire a change. I hope that with these simple recipes, we can help to bring back the idea of family togetherness. A family that cooks together, stays together!

But beyond the social benefits, cooking is an essential life skill. It helps to develop a sense of independence and achievement.
