The 13th century was hostile and hard for commoners, with but few places of exception. Amongst the middle class gentry in what is now Belgium, was Tigwalt, who, though well-stricken in years, was a highly esteemed man in the day’s society. A philosopher by character and much caught up in society issues, he was a loving husband nonetheless. His wife had died many years past, leaving him alone to raise his four year old daughter, who was now eighteen. Lineta was her name, eloquent and sweet, charming no less, and thoughtful as she handled situations for everyone’s best interest. In her days growing up, some would turn against her out of jealousy of her character.
Death seemed to be a close corner for Tigwalt. In these final years, he grew concerned, knowing that he was dying, and that his finances were diminishing. What was left of his estate would even be forfeited from his daughter, by law.
In these days, he eventually found relief as he discovered that, in mere months, a man had captured his daughter’s heart. Lineta was married shortly hence, and Tigwalt could now go to his grave knowing that his daughter was taken care of. On his death bed, he gave his daughter a pearl that belonged to
