Every midsummer, for as far back as Peter Fisher could recall, his family had gotten up before dawn to make the long walk to the top of the highest hill that overlooked the nearest village to his family's farm and visit the fair. His siblings always looked forward to this day with breathless anticipation. His sisters—well, all of his sisters save Elinor—would chat together as they worked in the kitchen about what they would buy with the coins they had saved all year. His brothers would dare each other to attempt the feats the acrobatic performers had done the year before, and wonder how they would top their old tricks this year.

Peter had never cared much for the fair. He didn't like the noise of crowds, or the heat from all the bodies pressed close all around him.
