About this ebook

Read to me ~ Stories of Christ-like Character was written for family reading time. Family togetherness time should start with the reading of books. Grammy Leigh wrote the stories so that you would have character building epics to read to your children when they want a story; and then for them to read to you when they are able. She hopes that you enjoy sharing them as much as she enjoyed writing them.

    Dedication:

First of all I would like to thank the Lord Jesus for giving me the words to write these tales. He is my guiding Light in this and all projects.

I would like to dedicate this volume to the Tracy children, who have given me much inspiration through the years we have been related. Jim Tracy, one of my illustrators, and his siblings, have been instrumental in the creation of these and many other stories.

I would also like to take a moment to thank Betty Sue Tracy and Betty Wiltse (another of my illustrators), my mentors in putting my words onto the page and into print.

    A Mother’s Love, Reminiscent of the Father’s

Once there was a family of five bunnies, Mother Bunny, Lewis, Laurel, Larry and Lisa. Lisa was the youngest. Every day Mother would take the little buns out into the meadow to eat the sweet, warm grasses and to play among the rocks and trees. Mother stood watch over her little bunnies to protect them. If a stranger happened in to the meadow, Mother would lead it away from the youngsters and out of the meadow.

One day while Mother was leading a stranger away, Lisa decided to follow them to see where Mother would go. The other buns tried to talk her out of it, but Lisa insisted. And she quickly hopped off after Mother and the stranger. When Mother returned Lisa was nowhere to be found. So Mother Bunny put the other three little bunnies into their burrow and went looking for Lisa.

Mother searched for Lisa throughout the meadow very late into the night. When she finally found her, Lisa was at the edge of the dark forest all alone and crying under an old hollow log. Mother picked up her young bunny and carried her home, rejoicing all the way over finding Lisa safe and unharmed.

The actions of this Mother Bunny remind me of our Heavenly Father. The Bible describes Him as the good shepherd; who having 100 sheep and one of them strays away, leaves the 99 and go out looking for the one who is lost. And when He has found this lost one, He rejoices exceedingly for its return. Yes, and all of heaven rejoices with Him in the lost soul that returns to the fold of our Father.

I am so thankful that our Heavenly Father gives us the opportunity for a second chance to live with Him in His kingdom, aren’t you?

    Remember what the Bible says:

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:12-15, NIV.

    Bobby’s Valentine

Everyone has a favorite love story to tell and I’m no different. My friend Bobby has a very special love story; and he has asked me to share it with you.

Bobby is a young lad in the sixth grade. He lives with his Grandpa John in a cabin in the North Woods of Minnesota. His mother and father had died in a plane crash about two years ago on their way back to Minnesota from the mission field in Panama. This was just to be a year off for building up their support for the church they had built in there; then they would go back to the mission field and their work in the church. But then there was engine trouble in the plane’s right engine and it caught fire. This put terrible stress on the left engine and it, too began to smoke.

The pilot tried to set the plane down in a nearby field, but the left engine blew up as he attempted the landing. Bobby and the flight attendant, who had just walked him to the restroom in the rear of the plane, were the only survivors.

Panama was the only home Bobby remembered. He had lived there since he was two years old. So he spoke Spanish as well as he could English. Bobby sometimes forgets that Grandpa John doesn't speak or understand Spanish.

After the plane crash Grandpa John was Bobby’s only relative that was able to care for him. His only other relatives were a pair of elderly aunts who lived in a senior complex in Palm Beach, Florida; but Grandpa John wasn't sure where. He did have their phone number and called them of the passing of Bobby’s parents.

The first two weeks after Bobby arrived were very rough going. Grandpa John and Bobby had only met briefly before his family went to Panama, so were just getting to know each other.

After about a month so that Bobby could get adjusted to living with Grandpa, he was enrolled in the local Christian School. Grandpa John was the high school math and science teacher as well as the basketball coach, so he was close by if Bobby needed anything.

Winter was almost over and the first of February was soon upon them. With Valentine’s Day on the way, everyone was busy making plans for the big Valentine's dinner the school was putting on; it was called the Sweetheart Social. There were decorations to be made and hung, the gym floor to wax and invitations to be sent.

All of this seemed very strange to Bobby; he had never heard of Valentine’s Day before.  Grandpa John explained that it was a special day
