Spinning and Weaving’s Contributing Editor, Elizabeth Miller, is a Chicago feminist activist who runs the Chicago Feminist Salon and co-organized the Women in Media Conference, a radical feminist conference held in Chicago in 2018. In recent years, she worked on the successful campaigns to get the U.S. Equal Rights Amendment ratified in Illinois and to enact Illinois House Bill 40, which ensured that abortion will remain legal in Illinois even if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. Among other projects, she is currently working with the U.S. radical feminist organization Feminists in Struggle to lobby Congress to pass legislation protecting women’s sex-based rights and the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and gender non-conforming people, organizing two other radical feminist conferences in the United States, and running several large radical feminist social media pages and groups.

I had taken a job, though at the exact moment it was offered to me I wasn't looking for it.  Ironic how things pop up when you are not paying attention.  I had been looking for a job for nearly a month since I had been back in town, and I was looking for something that would give me experience and money.  Sense I had refused to work at a fast food joint or anything that didn’t pay a reasonable salary I had passed up several jobs.  Thankfully my savings was well enough off that I knew I had several more months before I really needed a job, and at that point it would be any job available.

What I did get was something beyond anything that I could have dreamed of.  I would receive experience as a Secretary, Stockbroker, Personal Assistant, Money Manager, Bodyguard and Translator.  Well by the time I had finished my services which was requested for the next several years I would be able to speak several languages fluently, thankfully I had already learned the basics of several languages, it was just a matter of fine tuning those and learning the others.

The meeting had been at chance, a extraordinary twist of fate, that was played well by the forces unseen.  He stood with confidence and intrigue.  A perfect example of a playboy who had the money and the package to get any blond haired twig in the club he wanted.  Women had been falling over him and for him since he walked into the club, but it wasn't till I missed biting my tongue and spoke my opinion to him that he found out just what I thought of him.  He maneuvered himself over to me as I was dancing solo on the dancefloor, I had been enjoying myself till he came over.  I turned away from him slightly but that didn't stop him from making himself present behind me to lean in to speak into my ear:

Wanna hike that dress up a little more?  Between the couple of drinks I had in me and the annoyance of his flamboyance I responded:

You have already hiked enough of them up tonight, run along I don't have time to deal with your boyish games.

Finally.  About damn time too!  I turned towards him to look him in the eyes, or as best I could with the scattered lighting and the rainbow of colors and flashing lasers flying around the room, he smiled lightly at me, regarding me fully.  He spoke up:

I appreciate your honesty.  Allow me to buy you a drink in the V.I.P. lounge.  I had no true, honest, or intelligent idea why I agreed to this, it was bad enough I was here with family and friends and they happened to be off at a table resting from dancing and enjoying stronger drinks then I cared for.  I followed him down the disco light hallway and he pulled a curtain aside to a V.I.P. room.

We took a seat in the lounge as another man was sitting in there with two women on either side of him kissing and touching.  By touching I mean petting, and by petting I was amazed he still had most of his shirt on as well as pants.  The man who asked me in turned back to me, regarding me for a few brief seconds before telling the other guy to excuse himself and his ladies from the room.  He ordered a bottle of wine and the waiter left to fetch it, we had taken a seat on a large sofa, I was a glancing foot away from him as the waiter came back and poured the wine into two glasses he brought with him.  I took one and he clinked my glass as he spoke up:

To the only woman in this club who has put me in my place.  I took a sip of wine and responded:

Why do I impress you so much?  I was beyond sceptical.  He smiled:

Because  of your honesty, you have your own priorities and I respect that.  May I have your name?  What the hell was this kind of questioning?  Wine in the V.I.P. lounge and now he was being civil?  I answered:

My name is Pandora.  He smiled:

Beautiful name, nice to meet you Pandora, my name is Alan.  I smiled and he offered me his hand to shake, I shook it and gave him one of my nice to meet you but what the hell am I doing here handshakes.  We parted hands, I could help feeling the buzzing through my body from just his hand shake, there was something about him I couldn't pin.  We took a sip of the wine at the same time, I shortened mine upon noticing the parallel interaction, it was expensive wine too.  I could taste the hundred dollar bills running down my throat with the sweet aftertaste.  He spoke up:

Is there a last name to go with Pandora?

    Adams.

Pandora Adams, interesting name, my full name is Alan MacKinley.  What is a young lady like you doing alone at a club like this?

    Who says I am alone?

I made a presumption sense I didn't have a boyfriend punching me in the face, I also hadn't seen you with anyone on the dancefloor.

I am with a couple family members and some friends.

Family huh?  Should you let them know where you are?

They are not that close of family.

In other words they wouldn't heed any attention to you leaving the club with a man?

Good question.  I was relaxing around him, wasn’t sure if it was because he was sounding normal and wasn’t posing a threat.  He smiled and nodded his head, this was a relaxed trusting smile, not a forced I have you right where I want you smile.  He spoke up:

    Do you have a job?

    Not at the moment.

What job interests do you have?

Relatively anything with a decent paycheck, secretary, marketing, warehouse work, shift manager.  I am open to new possibilities.

What skills would make you a good secretary?  I answered:

I am on the O.C.D. side, I have a good and dedicated filling system, I like reading and writing, I am good with languages and pick up on them quickly, I am good at answering phones and have no problem calming people down or putting them in their place, I believe I have good communications skills and I can hold my liquor.  He grinned:

Sounds like you know what you are doing.

I am one of those people who can do any job and do it good, Jack of all trades type.  I just have to enjoy the job or I don’t give it my full potential.

Sounds like you also know yourself.  Not very many people even know who they are.  I nodded my head:

Life isn’t the same as it use to be.  The new generations face different problems and issues then the old.  He nodded his head:

If I were to offer you a job as my Personal Assistant would you take it?  I took another small sip of the wine.  I wasn't a wino, give me moderately priced to cheap wine anytime.  I answered:

Depends on the line of work you are in.

I am a world traveling businessman.  I travel to different cities and countries all over the world and I am on the road a lot.  My home base is here, so I am here a majority of the year.  I have a private jet, and a security team that I hardly use, usually only when I am traveling.  I deal with multi billion dollar companies and business owners, I usually step in when businesses are having trouble or need a boost.  I have a variety of companies under me and I am looking to expand further.

I felt my heart skip at traveling the world, talking about a dream come true.  But why the hell me?  Just because I showed him women have balls on the dance floor and all of a sudden he is showing me a once in a lifetime opportunity.  I responded after a few moments:

What are your expectations from a Personal Assistant?  He smiled:

I need someone who can handle my schedule, travel, phone calls, sit through meetings with me and be able to offer a relative opinion, and on the occasion escort to a few dinners and events.  Deal with my fiance, she is not my first choice in a wife, she is my parents idea of a solution to my age and being an unmarried businessman.  She has a lot of plans for us.  I nodded my head:

Is that why you are hiking up skirts and seducing women in night clubs?  He answered:

I have yet to go to bed with anyone but my fiance.  She can dance with any man she wants and grab at him, I should be allowed to enjoy myself on the dance floor considering she won't dance with me.  I nodded my head.  I responded:

    Do you love her?

    Enough.

    Enough?  He nodded his head:

Enough to follow through with the engagement.  I nodded my head:

    Under contract?

    Yes.

And she holds the same regard for you, she doesn't go to bed with other men?  He shook his head:

No she does not.  If she were to sleep with another man, she would be drop kicked back to her parents house, the engagement over with no matter the consequences and I would probably find someone to sleep with to get over her.  I nodded my head:

Well hopefully she is not foolish enough to let go of what she has.  He smiled:

Another reason I want to hire you.  You are wise for your young years.  I need someone with your foresight.  I nodded my head:

Very well, at any time I can walk away, severance package enough to get me home from wherever we are in the world with the promise that I won't be sought after by anyone who would do good by doing you harm.  He grinned:

Not to worry, that is already taken care of, you severance package will be a lot bigger than that, and I require two weeks notice, even if I tell you, you can leave prior to the end of those two weeks.  I nodded my head, he reached out a hand and I shook it again.  He grinned:

I need you to meet me at this address tomorrow morning at ten a.m.  I am sure you will not be late.  I took the card that he had pulled out of his pocket from him.  I reviewed it over and nodded my head:

As long as you are not late.  He smiled:

Not to worry there.  What do you think of the wine?

It is too expensive for me.  He smiled:

It won't be too expensive for you by the time you leave my services which hopefully won't be for a long time.  I hate having to find new Personal Assistants.  I nodded my head.  I reached my hand out again and he took it and kissed the back of it:

Till tomorrow Ms. Pandora Adams.  I smiled:

Till Tomorrow Mr. Alan MacKinley.  I stood up and left the V.I.P. lounge and located my family and friends telling them that I was going to be going home.  I made my way out of the club, it was inside of a hotel resort.  Walking down the halls I got a strange feeling, like I was being watched or followed.  I had my keys in my hand along with my phone and I headed towards my car, looking around me keeping my surroundings.  I got into my car after checking the back seat and locked the doors as I started it and pulled out of my parking spot, still unable to shake the feeling.  I took a long and very different way home, this enabled me to make sure I wasn't being followed.

I got to the house, it was my Grandparents house, I lived with them as I had just moved back from out of state working and going to college.  I had a key to the downstairs apartment.  I was wondering how long it was going to be till my cousins got home from the club.  I locked the door behind me.  Checked my apartment over and headed to my bathroom, slipped out of my dress and undergarments and got into the shower.  By the time I got out I could hear my cousins getting home, between the giggling and attempt to be quiet which they were failing at miserably I wondered who the sober one was who drove home.

I locked my door that went up the stairs and I shut the door to my bedroom and locked it as well.  Not that I didn’t trust my cousins, knowing them they would probably sneak in to set up booby traps or steal my food, and I didn’t want to be woken up in the middle of the night especially before starting a new job tomorrow.  I climbed into bed and fell asleep even threw some of the loud footsteps up stairs.  I woke up with my eight a.m. alarm and I climbed out of bed, my hair was still damp from my shower the night before, I brushed threw it and pulled it back into a bun, grabbed some slacks and a nice button up shirt and put them on.  A touch of make up around my eyes to make the blue stand out more and a simple necklace, earrings and some comfortable but professional shoes, since I knew being an assistant meant I was probably going to be his errand girl.

I headed  over to my kitchen, it was nearly a full kitchen for just being a basement apartment, I made myself breakfast and ate it slowly, I was going to leave in about fifteen minutes, that should put me arriving at my destination roughly ten minutes before the Ten a.m. meeting time.  I finished up and cleaned my dishes, I headed out of my basement apartment and locked it up.  I got to my car and unlocked it, I was reading the card he had given me last night.  I knew where it was, I was familiar with the building and surrounding area.

I drove the speed limit, which was amazing for me and I got to my destination in the time I had estimated.  I parked my car and got out, locking it and walking up to the office, I opened the doors and Alan was talking to the receptionist, he turned and smiled:

Good morning Ms. Adams, if you don't mind following me.  I responded as I followed him thru the office to the elevator:

    "How are you this
