A Short Summary of the Book
Definition‘to pack a bigger punch.’
to hit hard and with skill
to have a powerful effect
Once upon a time I decided to become a professional speaker. Every day, I studied the experts and tried to become as good as them, but I could not work out my style, my angle, my message, a real message.
Then one day, after years of searching, I realised I would simply have to start putting myself out there, start giving speeches and hope that my message would somehow come to me. Because of that, I made many mistakes and had a few successes too. I felt the vulnerabilities of speaking in public, such as having mental blanks during speaking competitions before a hundred people and the sweating that ensued.
And because of that, I gradually started to realise what worked and what didn’t work as a speaker and entrepreneur. Until finally, after some patience, some calm, quiet self-introspection and listening to the advice of wise entrepreneur and professional speaking friends, I started to uncover my real message. It dawned on me that others might need a hand uncovering their real message too, so that is what this book is about.
What if there was a message, hidden deep within your mind, a real message with the potential to have a powerful effect over many people? A message with the potential to create significant positive changes in the world, just like any role model you’ve ever had. A message, that when delivered to your audience, could hit hard with skill and would pack a bigger punch. Would you want to know what it was?
This is what you must do: You need to uncover your real message. Because it causes you to have more energy to go around. Because it will cause you to earn more money so you can reinvest back into your service for others. And because it will save you time so you can do the things you want to do. It will also cause you to become a master of your unique niche.
The following seven steps of this book will show you how to uncover your real message. They are based on a decade of researching the expert speakers and entrepreneurs, a decade of my own humble efforts, trial and error, a decade of putting myself out there, sticking at it and keeping my eyes on the prize. Here are the seven steps to uncover your real message.
Step 1: Start with the sound of one thousand hands clapping. My own way of saying what Steven Covey says, begin with the end in mind. Start with the sound of a thousand hands clapping means imagining how your audience will look and sound once you have delivered your real message. What if you can’t visualise? Get yourself a good pair of headphones and listen to a wide range of music that you enjoy. Music stimulates the visualising part of the brain.
Step 2: Declare who you are and why you care. This means announcing publicly who you are and what you’re all about. I recommend a lot of meditation, self-reflective journal writing and joining Toastmasters. These activities allow you to explore who you are and what you want to say. Attend two networking events a week and post something educational on social media each week. What if you can’t work out who you are nor why you care? You need to find greater meaning for your life. Victor Frankl writes in Man’ Search For Meaning, that true happiness comes from being committed to another person or a cause beyond yourself.
Step 3: Discover the wisdom in your stories. Because everyone has got a story and each story comes with a universal human interest. List a dozen memories from your life that stand out to you and find the universal human interest within them. In other words, what was the lesson, the value and message of your memories to which we can all relate? Write those memories down as a short story about three to five minutes long when spoken aloud. Audiences want to understand where you are coming from and how it relates to them, so what better way than through you own stories? What if you are having trouble discovering the wisdom in your stories? Ask a friend or someone in your family to jog your memory, perhaps a time you shared together. A second way of discovering the wisdom in your stories is to ask this friend to tell you about a time that you helped them or another person in some way and create a story from their perspective. Dream analysis and studying comparative mythology is also very helpful.
Step 4: Unleash your natural message mojo. Because audiences love an authentic and enthusiastic speaker and educator. Unleashing your natural message mojo is harnessing the things you do well every day, like being a good friend, like taking care of your appearance, and educating those who struggle with it. Perhaps you cannot imagine others having a problem with something for which you had natural mojo? To unleash your natural message mojo, find out what you’re good at, what you love talking about and educate people about it. What if you can’t work out what you do well? Just like in the previous step, ask a friend or family member to help you. An outside opinion of ourselves helps us see what we cannot.
Step 5: Align with your target audience and their specific problem. Because you want to know what it’s like to walk in their shoes, and to see how they experience their problem. Aligning in the sense I am talking about is practicing imaginative thought-experiments upon your audience. We must imagine an awesome future for our audience if we are to show them how to create one. We must paint a vision of their future success and encourage them to achieve it. Therefore, find quiet moments in your day or just before bed, imagine yourself to be the total sum of human minds in your audience and hold their specific problem in your thoughts. Write down in a journal what ideas came to you, how you experienced the problem from your audience’s perspective. What if you cannot imagine these thought-experiments? Attend a local kindergarten and ask to book an appointment with the experts of ‘making believe’. If that fails, attend networking events and ask people directly the old fashion way, ‘what is it like in your shoes?’
Step 6: Test your real message in the real world. Because nothing beats real world experience when trying to uncover your real message. Testing your real message in the real world is being a guest speaker at service clubs, toastmaster meetings, P&C events, Chamber of Commerce chapters and other community groups, places where you will get a living audience in front of you. Give your speech, tell your story and deliver your real message. Ask the audience for feedback with a Q & A or ask them to write a few comments and questions on the back of their business card. Then collect the cards and connect with them regularly. What if you cannot test your message like I have suggested? Record a sixty second video each week in which you deliver your real message and an educational tip, then upload it to your network on social media and ask for feedback.
Step 7: Evolve the magic in your message. Because it causes you to discover your greatest value so you can share it with your audience. Evolving the magic in your message is the psychological inner work of a speaker and entrepreneur. To do this, draw what you dream about when you sleep and try to decipher your real message from the images. What if you cannot remember your dreams? Carl Jung says to start a hobby, an adult version of your childhood past-time to activate your imagination. Start making things (art, craft, baking, building, composing, dancing, singing, writing, movie making) and play ‘make believe’ with your kids or nieces and nephews. When we are having fun, our brain works better, and our creative juices begin to flow.
Imagine this future scenario, some three to six months away,
