Designed by a plein air artist for plein air artists, the Sojourn Pochade is a light weight box that comes with its own slick wet panel carrier – the Portage. The Sojourn can carry one 11” x 14” or use the easy-to-assemble dividers to allow it to carry two 6” x 8” or one 8” x 10” and one 5” x 7” panels. For longer trips, the Portage wet panel carrier can carry up to 6 panels. Drop the Sojourn Pochade and the Portage wet panel carrier in a backpack and you are ready to go.


A one day garage-bench project, the Sojourn can be built using the minimum of hand tools. It costs less than $90 in material to build this 12 ½” x 15 ½” pochade box and wet panel carrier. Everything you need is readily available at your local hardware store. Just take the shopping list that is provided and check off the items as you place them in the cart. The detailed, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions below, along with the diagrams, will guide you through the project and help you finish your dream pochade in one rainy day.

The instructions below will guide you to build the Sojourn Pochade and the Portage wet panel carriers.

The tools you will need

Are:

Mitre saw (manual or electric),

Metal saw,

Drill and drill bits,

Screw driver,

Heavy box cutter,

Sanding paper (electric sander is optional),

Hand plane,

Straight edge metal ruler,

Wood glue

Clamps

Metal file

Of course if you have more tools, don’t hesitate to use them if they make your work easier.

The shopping list:

I got my wood from Lowes because the Home Depot in my town did not have square dowels. That may or may not be the case in your town. I found Lowes’ prices higher on hardware but even on wood.
