American Flag
CATEGORY: Woodworking; Social Studies, and Art.
OBJECTIVE: "After a discussion about Flags, the student will make their own copy of an American flag, using materials provided, during several shop classes (maybe four).
MATERIALS:
Wood: A one-by-twelve that is 21 inches in length.
Tools required: Framing square, rulers, yardsticks, rulers. Also; handsaws, safety glasses, sandpaper, paper with star pattern(s), hammers and a nail.
Paints needed; Red, White, and Blue paint (Latex – wash off). Sponge brushes, Painter Tape (several rolls), Drop clothes. Other materials; Betsy Ross Flag pattern, Dollar Store stars (they sell gold and silver ones called Unique Confetti).
PROCEDURE:
Student will wear safety glass and aprons provided.
Students will measure and cut lumber with handsaw.
Students will sand the edges of their cuts.
Student will put their name on their projects!
Students will measure thirteen seperate lines spacing at 7/8".
Mark off for the field
of stars - upper left 9 ½ wide and six inches deep. Paint this entire area blue. Allow to dry.
Start taping off what will be the white lines.
Paint the Red Strips first. Allow to dry.
Peel off the tape, and now tape over the red strips.
Paint the white strips – allow to dry.
Remove all the tape. Touch up as needed.
Add the stars; silver or gold, pattern you desire.
Do not use Super Glue
– use other Adhesives.
Add a Protective coating to your Flag.
