Introduction
As a young boy, I was always amazed how authors could talk about a subject, then at some point, distill the information into one or two sentences. It was at that time that I started becoming a big fan of quotations. The more I read, the more I came to understand the meaning behind the quotations that over time have become famous. As such, on the quotes listed in this book, I have added Author’s Notes
to give a little insight as to how I came up with a quotation.
These quotations were developed and written or posted sometime between 1976 and 2016, and there is no particular order to how the quotes are arranged except I did tend to put the more recent quotes first and the older quotes last. I did not want to group them by topic, since some quotes occupy more than just one train of thought, so instead created an index that you can access by word or phrase.
Some time ago I started an online quotations blog (wordecho.fireflyfunds.com) entitled Potent Quotables
that lists these and many other quotations. In the blog, as in this book, I occasionally attached a picture to emphasize the meaning of the quotation. Those quotations with a picture have an asterisk * in the title. In this book, blank spaces are purposely available for you to insert your own picture or image, or any comments you have. As a bonus, if you come up with a great picture to one of these quotes, I will be sure to include it on my blog and in any subsequent additions of this book. You can please send it to me at jxf@fireflyfunds.com.
Finally, thank you for obtaining this book. I hope to impart some of the wisdom I have learned, read, experienced or have been taught to you in a easy to access format. During my career, I did a lot of branding work were the key objective was always to extract those nuggets of differentiation that made a product or service stand out. I selected the title Distilled Thoughts
to reflect the process of coming up with these quotations over my life.
This is a living book, and while I have been on this planet for some time, there will be more quotations to add. I also have to thank the many people in my life who in ways large and small have added to this work through friendship, love, battles, triumphs, or hard learned lessons.
Note: quotes with * have a picture associated with them.
