ALL TOGETHER NOW

Writing can be a lonely, interior profession—and frankly, that’s always been one of the appeals for me.1 There are many ways to be creative in this world, and as a kid I explored a lot of them. Sometimes a particular creative channel required talent that I simply didn’t have—for example, the ability to draw anything that resembled anything.2 Sometimes it required a level of effort and training I simply had no interest in pursuing.3 But more often than not, I noped out of specific creative expressions for the simple reason that I don’t like working with other people.

A lot of creative outlets require collaboration. Writing requires some level of collaboration in the sense of working with an editor and dealing with feedback and revisions and trying to communicate your ideas to a marketing department of some sort. But the actual writing can and you don’t have to deal with anyone else’s ideas, schedule, or process. It’s glorious, most of the time.
