Chapter 1
The first night I struggled. I cried. I played the events of my life over and over again in my head. I wasn’t going to budge. Only I knew the truth, and nobody was going to convince me otherwise. There had to be a way to make them see the truth too, but I didn’t know where the truth was or where to look for it. Lost and nowhere to turn I had nobody left to talk to because they had vanished. This place allowed plenty of time for me to discover what happened. Everyone was against me and I had to get them on my side. These thoughts were in my head day and night and there was a constant pull between my thoughts and the words of others. Maybe they would listen, or maybe I would spend the rest of my life here.
The first morning I sat in the corner on the floor in the large communal room. My toes were curled inward while my knees were bent closely to my chest. I clutched my book with both hands; it contained all my contemplations. I watched, through the slits in my hair, everyone.
After some time, one of the staff members came to take me to visit with one of the doctors. Guided by my elbow, I walked; one slow step at a time, the sole of my foot faced behind me while my toenails rubbed on the tiled floor.
Unknowingly, I arrived at the doctor’s office and I was directed to sit on a chair. When I was sitting there, staring at the blank walls, it occurred to me that the consequences of my situation are never-ending. The bewilderment of the events in my life remains unsolved and will probably stay that way.
The only way I was going to get out of here depended upon the doctors’ imagination of the probable. My whole life, that of which I have actually lived, I worked so hard to succeed; yet, nothing resulted from my efforts. This place isn’t where I belong and I am certain of that. Unlike the others, I refused to be lost forever in the reflection of uncertainty.
As I sat in the waiting room in deliberation, I was interrupted by a voice.
Alexis Mclean. The doctor is ready to see you now.
My gazed moved from the floor to a woman standing in a doorway.
Come on sweetheart. You can follow me.
At the sound of her words, I got up. As I walked, my steps were dependent on the directional steps taken by the woman. She stopped and so I also stopped. My stare went upward until it reached her face. She smiled and pointed to a door.
Here we are Alexis, you will be in room eight today. Go ahead and have a seat on that couch. The doctor will be with you shortly. Do you have any questions for me,
the woman asked.
I shook my head slowly to right and then to the left.
Okay, go ahead inside and make yourself comfortable,
the woman added.
I walked with cautious footsteps in the direction of the couch. My feet brushed against the rough fibers that were the floor. When I reached the couch, I observed the imprints of many other people who have sat there before me. By sitting down, I knew that my stamp would join the other impressions that were interlocking, and soon nobody would be able to tell the difference among us. I sat, and I waited with my hands folded in my lap and my feet placed evenly on the surface. After about two minutes, the wooden door creaked opened slowly and in walked a tall, slender woman. She wore a
