About this ebook

“... Going down! This airplane is going down! Help me! I don’t want to die! Mom, we’re going down! Heeeeelp!”

A girl was plagued every night by a gruesome nightmare. Quent, the girl’s father and a pilot, encountered a continually flying “ghost airplane” with a broken engine. Is there any link between these two incidents? Even doctors have given up on treating the girl. So, Quent’s wife seeks help from Yoma Fialka, an exorcist.

Yoma realizes she cannot let the ghost airplane loose, and asks her friends for assistance. At a high altitude, can they aerially maneuver to hop from a passenger plane to the ghost airplane? Can they solve the case of the ghost airplane and the evil spirits?

In the series, this story is by far the fastest-paced and the most thrilling. Solving the mystery has never been done with this much of edge and brilliance.

Here is the newest installment of “The Gifted” series from Ryosuke Akizuki, a gifted author, whose fusions between mystery and spirituals are unsurpassed.

    Prologue

Rolling, dark green fields could be seen through sparse fleecy clouds below him. The visibility was good. In the distance, white clouds and a blue sky were forming beautiful chromatic gradations above a mountain range.

After viewing forward, Quent Varon sighed. Seith Maddox, a copilot sitting to his right, looked a bit relaxed even though they were entering the landing phase of the flight.

Captain, we need not worry at all, thanks to this fine weather.

Seith had his back on the seat and stretched a bit. Although Quent heard Seith was six years younger than he was, Seith looked much younger than his actual age, 42. It was not easy for Quent to believe that Seith had a 17-year-old son.

    You’re right.

Quent showed his smile and checked the instrument panel. World Falcon Airlines Flight 971 was about to start the landing process to arrive at the domestic flight terminal of City International Airport, about 20 minutes behind the schedule.

If I remember correctly, your son also wants to be a pilot, doesn’t he?

Looking out through the window, Quent asked Seith.

He does. Well, I’m a little happy that he admires his father’s occupation. How is your child, captain?

Seith asked, while blushing and smiling.

Oh? Umm, you know, I have a daughter. Moreover, she’s only four.

Quent recalled how his daughter was sleeping last night, and the memory cast a slightly gloomy shadow on his face.

Then, how about her being a cabin attendant? Your daughter has to be cute, because you are her father. I am sure that she is going to look good in our company’s uniform.

Seith’s amusingly merry voice echoed in the cockpit.

... But, in fact, my daughter is afraid of airplanes, for unknown reasons.

Quent found himself putting the agony on the tone of his tongue, and regretted doing so.

What? What do you mean? Does your daughter have a negative memory regarding airplanes?

Slight somberness descended on Seith’s face.

No, she has never boarded an airplane.

... Even so, she has recently been crying, The airplane is falling! in her dream almost every night.

It was a symptom Quent could not understand. When she was about two, he brought his daughter to an airport to show her airplanes. But once she saw an airplane, she was frightened and started crying. Since then, she had been showing obvious signs of rejection toward airplanes. Quent was told by his wife not to talk about his job. He could somewhat stand it. However, he would feel like suffering from a nervous breakdown, whenever he saw his daughter suffering from the nightmare as of late.

Is she afraid of airplanes, even though she has never gotten on them?

As if he could not believe it, Seith cocked his head slightly. Quent had the same feeling. He could not find any clue as to why his daughter was scared of airplanes. Quent was proud of his occupation as a pilot. However, he felt that his daughter was denying everything about his job, while she was doing so without any intent.

I don’t have any idea why she does so.

Quent uttered and sighed quietly. His wife brought his daughter to a psychiatrist for consultation. But the doctor could do nothing but tilt his head. He could not find the source of her airplane-phobia.

I wonder if she saw terrifying footages regarding airplanes.

... No, the symptom is not so easily understandable like that. More real ... Right. It’s more raw and lurid.

Again, Quent recalled his daughter whom he saw the night before. His daughter, who was lying on her bed, suddenly started screaming at around 02:00 a.m.

... Going down! This airplane is going down! Help me! I don’t want to die! Mom, we’re going down! Heeeeelp!

It seemed to have been her scream from the bottom of her soul. She was showing an agonized look and screaming on the bed, while looking like a completely different person. His wife was embracing his daughter tightly and was desperately speaking to her like she was uttering an incantation. That’s okay. You’re fine. The airplane will never go down. You’re safe. His daughter was struggling violently and then suddenly became quiet. Did the airplane which she was supposedly on board in her dream land safely somewhere? Or ... When he thought so, he felt a chill running down his spine. Some day, it might happen to me as well ... He could do nothing but think that way.

... Hey, darling ... I think we should let a priest check her. Perhaps, she might be possessed by a demon.

The proposition that his wife was coming down to, after doctors had given up on their daughter, was not what Quent could easily accept. Possession by a demon ... How can such a thing happen? But, if my wife would be able to feel at ease by doing so ... Quent thought so and agreed to let her bring his daughter to a church in City, though he himself could not accompany them. She is probably taking his daughter to the church by now. Will it change anything ...? I hope it will work ... While
