    Johann Hevelius

    Lynx and several other constellations owe their existence to Johann Hevelius, a diligent seventeenth century astronomer. Among his other accomplishments, he made an early map of the lunar surface, and some of his topographical suggestions are still in use today. He also constructed his own observatory, which featured some marvelous telescopes, including a very long one with a focal length of 150 feet. He also discovered four comets.

    In addition to Lynx, he also invented the constellations Leo Minor, Scutum, Canes Venatici, Lacerta, Sextans, and Vulpecula.

    The origin of the name Lynx is a mystery. According to one Greek myth, a man named Lynceus sailed with Jason when he fetched the golden fleece. His eyesight was exceptional, and his name resembles the word lynx. However, we do not know whether Hevelius was thinking about this myth when he
