    Draco in Astronomy and Mythology

    Draco is a long constellation that winds its way across the heavens. It  is located far north in the celestial sphere, so far north that it never sinks beneath the horizon when viewed from Wisconsin or Maine in the United States or from Scotland or Sweden in Europe. In fact, you would have to travel pretty far south before you could witness Draco-set and Draco-rise. As a result, we call Draco a circumpolar constellation.

    Draco has two well-known neighbors: Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, better known as the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper. The tail of Draco lies between the two. As you probably know, these two neighbors are also circumpolar constellations.

    Other neighbors are Cepheus, Cygnus, Lyra, Hercules, Bootes, and Camelopardalis.

    The name is a Latin word derived from the ancient Greek word drákon, which originally meant dragon and later acquired the additional meaning of serpent, according to
