    Bianca refused to teach Life Skills because she was an English teacher, full stop, period. She wasn’t trying to be sassy or stubborn, and if it came off that way, she apologized to her supervisor. But, come on, Life Skills? It was a fluff course. She wouldn’t teach it. For the last few years, teachers knew the colleges in Chicago were being retooled. Bianca hadn’t expected she would be too.

    Like her supervisor, though, she had to look at the numbers. Summer admission was light as a rule, and the general education courses were the only ones running. With around eight billion instructors qualified to teach basic math, history, and English composition, there were few classes to be rationed out even to the instructors with the most seniority. The college gave her two courses; she normally taught twice that. Criminal, as far as she was concerned.

    But rather than revolt (and earn a shrug from her supervisor and a pink slip from Human Resources), Bianca did what she did best. At school, she taught the differences between semicolons and colons and graded essays. At home, she made a budget: no new clothes, the wine section at the grocery store would not be perused. Her dad had helped her lease a brand new car a few years ago, but given the price of gas, it would be cheaper to ride the train.

    The cutbacks were far from unreasonable. She would make it work.

    As the leaves turned orange and yellow at the end of September she got another surprise. Her college had to drop courses to keep in line with state budget cuts. To Bianca, that made about as much sense as a doctor lopping off a patient’s leg to deal with athlete’s foot. She told her supervisor so, too. He gave her a shrug just as she expected, but not a pink slip. No, something that stung a little bit more. One composition course at half the pay for next semester.
