    Trick-Or-Treat Dragon - Xya Olsen

    ASH

THE WEDNESDAY BEFORE HALLOWEEN MARKED THE DATE OF TWO VERY BIG EVENTS FOR BOUGAINVILLEA AVENUE.

First, the dramatic breakup of Ash’s ex, Jaxon, and his latest boy-toy—which the whole cul-de-sac saw and heard.

And second, the arrival of a very fine piece of ass, compliments of the new neighbor in town.

    Not exactly in that order.

Ash witnessed both events from the comfort of his bedroom balcony, where he sipped his morning coffee trying to mind his own business. His plans were foiled when a U-Haul pulled into the yard next to his, and a gorgeous specimen of a man slipped out of the driver’s seat.

So that’s my new neighbor, he thought with delight.

The house next to his had been vacant for so long, Ash wondered if anyone would ever move in. At long last, his quiet prayers (for a hot new neighbor) were answered.

Ash took guilty pleasure in watching the man unload the furniture and boxes stacked within the back of the moving truck. He even delighted in how the early Florida heat gave the stranger no choice but to strip his shirt off—revealing the buffet of muscles hidden underneath.

Lord help me, his body’s like a temple... Ash breathed, fanning himself unsuccessfully with his hand.

With every item the man moved, his muscles flexed and bulged, showing off the efforts of his disciplined labor. Watching him, Ash imagined how many hours the stranger invested in working out and monitoring his nutrition. Then Ash looked down at his own lithe body and rolled his eyes. He might not have a six-pack, but he could appreciate his neighbor’s all the same.

Ash let out a dreamy sigh and leaned back in his chair. I love watching a man work hard...

He could ogle his new neighbor all day—and considered getting another cup of coffee just to elongate the experience—but a sudden commotion unfolded across the street and drew his attention away.

The front door to Jaxon’s home slammed so hard, the sound reverberated through the cul-de-sac. Moments later, a skinny, pasty male with bright red hair stormed down the walkway and made a beeline to a sleek, black Beetle parked in the driveway. Upon reaching it, they hastily opened the side door and threw several stuffed suitcases inside.

Ash watched as they dug their hand into their pocket and retrieved their car keys—only to drop them as Jaxon came stumbling out after him.

Babe, don’t go! Jaxon cried as he strode into view, wearing nothing more than a robe and boxer briefs.

    Ash rolled his eyes.

Here we go again, he thought. I wonder what he did this time.

Don’t call me that! snapped the redhead.

Jaxon groaned. Can’t we talk about this?

You lost that privilege when you cheated!

With that, the redhead scurried around the side of his car and yanked the door open. Before Jaxon could utter another word, he slammed it shut, shoved the keys into the ignition, and backed out onto the street.

Jaxon stood on the hot terracotta walkway, gaping as the Beetle sped down the street and out of view.

Some shit never changes, he muttered under his breath.

For once, he was glad Jaxon was no longer in his life. If he’d been foolish enough to stay and work things out, that would’ve been him.

Ash glanced back at the new neighbor who stared across the street at Jaxon, scratching his head. After a moment, he went back to work.

Ash considered going out and striking up a conversation, but what good would that do him? Ever since his blowup with Jaxon, Ash vowed he’d never get so invested in a neighbor again.

It had burned him badly, and now he had to watch the drama unfold in front of his nice home every day for the rest of his life. Or until he moved, which he didn’t see happening anytime soon.

Checking out the new eye-candy on the block wouldn’t hurt him so long as he kept his distance.

Just as he decided to get another cup and continue his low-key eavesdropping, a white truck appeared at the end of the cul-de-sac and headed straight for Ash’s front yard. The logo LOYAL CLEANING showed clearly on both sides of the vehicle, making Ash chuckle.

    Perfect timing.

From across the street, Jaxon watched the truck pull up in the gravel out front and scowled.

The look on his face was priceless—and Ash couldn’t help but howl with laughter.

That’s what you get! He thought as Jaxon stalked back into his house.

In the corner of his eye, he caught the new neighbor looking up at him. Their eyes met, and Ash gave a small wave. The man smiled at him and waved back, making Ash’s heart thump.

From the balcony, he watched his friend Loyal slip out of the white truck. He waved to Ash and the new neighbor before approaching the gate.

Excited to spill every single detail of the events that just unfolded, Ash left his mug on the tiny round table and hurried back into the house to open the front door. With a bounce in his step, he nearly fell down the stairs on his way to the parlor.

Ash couldn’t stop himself from smiling widely as he greeted Loyal. Ever since his friend got married, the two hadn’t hung out much. He missed their Wednesday meet-ups, when Loyal would park his work truck labeled LOYAL CLEANING out front. It was a quiet and not so subtle f-you to his neighbor across the road—his unfaithful ex, Jaxon.

Your timing is impeccable, Ash told him. You won’t believe what I just saw.

Your new neighbor? Loyal wondered, glancing towards the U-Haul.

Him, too, but Jaxon just got dumped for cheating.

Loyal diverted his attention towards the house across the street, but Ash’s ex was long gone. Again?

You know what they say about cheaters, Ash said, a foul taste in his mouth. Can I get you a cup of coffee?

Loyal’s eyes brightened. Coffee would be great.

He invited Loyal inside and closed the door behind them. He led the wolf shifter from the parlor to the kitchen where Ash busied himself with preparing their drinks. He pulled down two clean mugs from the cupboard and retrieved his coffee essentials—cream and sugar. He placed them on a modern serving tray and slid it onto the counter in front of Loyal. Grabbing a few packets of sugar and cream, Ash dumped them into his mug and leaned against the island.

Your new neighbor is just your type, isn’t he? Loyal commented
