    Let's break down the name just a bit so you'll comprehend the foundations before moving forward. Neuro represents the mind and how it influences and manages the body. It is a lot more than just the physical brain; rather, it is the way that the brain impacts the body on both mindful and subconscious levels.

    Linguistic means the way an individual uses language (words, tone, declarations, questions, etcetera). Language is a powerful window into what a person thinks, and by observing a person's language, it is possible to discover a great deal about him or her.

    The last part of the name-- Programming-- creates confusion when it isn't correctly described.

    This part of NLP isn't about setting an individual to think certain things, do things a certain way, or feel a particular way. Instead, programming is the process of taking a look at the patterns and thinking an individual uses repeatedly (their programs) and how they impact that individual's life.

    Everybody has their own programs, but many people just aren't aware of them and the impact they have.

    Pop Culture or Valid Change?

    NLP isn't without its critics. Some say that it is not a proper discipline just because it is not scientifically proven to be efficient. Others take a more psychological stance, assaulting it as new age silliness and cult-like programming. To a certain extent, these criticisms are actually valid-- NLP isn't empirically shown and there have been severe examples of specialists misusing NLP to take advantage of others.

    However, this does not mean NLP was actually without value just because of a few severe examples. These sorts of criticisms don't take into account one extremely
