DIY Homemade Medical Face Mask - Noelle Stephens
Introduction
You've probably seen face masks in medical dramas and comedies, made popular in mainstream media by attractive actors who wear them like badges of honor, but they also have useful real-world applications. Rather than just being props, they're regularly worn by actual medical professionals as protective gear as well as by everyday citizens to curtail the spread of germs.
Perhaps it's flu season again, that pesky time of the year when everyone seems to have runny noses and dry coughs that always seem to waft your way. Imagine you're in a crowded public transport system when the person across from you sneezes, spewing particles of bioaerosols that you can practically feel land on your face, even from a distance. It wouldn't be surprising as the average sneeze can produce upwards of 100,000 contagious microbes that can travel as fast as 160 kph (100 mph) and as far as 8 meters (26 ft).
Coughs can be just as bad, similarly emitting saliva droplets that can jettison in large plumes of air nearly as widely as sneezes do. If their producer is newly sick, and therefore at their most infectious, each cough can contain millions of bacterial or viral particles that are just yearning for another host to incubate in. A typical cough can generate a couple of thousand droplets carrying these virions, but sneezes are by far the most contagious transmitters of infections, propagating tens of thousands of these ticking time-bombs.
That means that it's highly probable that the particles from that sneeze are going right up your airway quicker than you can say, "Achoo!" You can hope that the sneeze didn't contain anything innocuous or communicable but, really, what are the chances of that? Wouldn't it be better if that person was wearing a face mask to avoid infecting anyone else or, better yet, if you had one to keep from getting sick whenever some leper breathes your direction?
Sure, you can try to count on sick individuals having the decency to cover up their mouths, yet, more often than not, people tend to cough or sneeze right into their hands, which is very counterproductive. This is particularly true if they decide to touch any handrails or door handles with those germy hands that you then might come into contact with, only to unknowingly smear those pathogens right onto your face.
Considering that several studies have shown that most people unconsciously touch their faces over a dozen times per hour, the likelihood of coming down with something multiplies exponentially during
