1. The 36 Chambers of Shaolin
The first chamber is, ‘I shall fight.’
The second chamber is, ‘Give food, water, medicines and things like that.’
The third chamber is, ‘Give wealth, clothes, ornaments and things like that.’
The fourth chamber is, ‘Void.’
The fifth chamber is, ‘Observe.’
The sixth chamber is, ‘Work.’
The seventh chamber is, ‘Work hard.’
The eighth chamber is, ‘Act.’
The ninth chamber is, ‘Believe.’
And the 36 are, ‘the 9 in the 4 directions.’
The first chamber is, ‘I shall fight.’
The world has two kinds of people, good and evil. The good follow certain principles in life that keep them from going wrong. These four principles are, non-violence, truth, celibacy and not to steal. This is an all-encompassing classification and if it is followed you will not go wrong.
The first principle is non-violence. Non-violence means that you should not hurt anyone by thought, word or deed. You should not think evil about anyone, or scare anyone or cause sorrow. This is non-violence in thought. You should not raise your voice or insult anyone. You should talk with gentle compassion to everyone. This is non-violence by word. Lastly there is non-violence applied to action. This means you should not inflict physical pain on any living creature whatsoever. As you follow non-violence you should not cause violence either. It is equally evil. Non-violence is the highest religion and the religion protects him who protects it.
The second principle is truth. You should not utter anything that is factually untrue. The factual truth is known by observation. What cannot be observed should not be taken as the truth and should not be uttered. Many people are talking about God. Most of them have not seen God and do not know what God is. They just want to make quick money. Let us consider the scriptures from ancient times. The scriptures are read because you need something to believe in. But of those teaching the scriptures, most do not know what the scriptures mean. Even scriptures are true only when observed. Truth is not known merely by listening, talking, reading or writing. Truth is known by experience.
The third principle is celibacy. This is the most important physical process. When semen or ovum is not spilled it turns into nectar. The semen or ovum is vital fluid. When it is not spilled its quality improves. You should refrain from all sexual action. The fluid in the body is to be raised by the upward flowing energy. This gives strength to the mind and body. Those who spill vital fluid destroy their own intelligence. The world is full of temptation, and it is important for a martial artist to conquer all temptation. You have to avoid all kinds of sexual sins in celibacy. You have to be on the watch out for bad company, as these people may tempt you to go wrong. This upward flowing energy starts like a small stream flowing on rocks, but as time passes it becomes like a river flowing steadily. This upward flowing force has the power to heal. Soon it becomes like equal energy everywhere. The vital fluid then takes the forms of the elements as it goes upwards. When the life force leaves the head at death, you attain to Nirvana. Nirvana is understood by raising oneself to higher and higher levels. At the highest level we experience Nirvana.
The fourth principle is not to steal. You should be happy with what you have earned by hard work. Stealing causes weight to the mind and body. You should be a giver in all transactions. You should not accept gifts and favors you haven’t worked for. It is important not to fall into debt because paying back later may prove to be very expensive. You should keep accounts carefully about what you have, earn and spend. These accounts should be simple enough to remember. You should earn enough money for your own basic comforts and for your responsibilities. It is not necessary to earn more than that. You should lead a simple life because the life of a martial artist is like that of a monk.
Let us now see the Law of Karma. ‘As is the action so is the consequence.’ Karma means action and this law cannot be violated even by the Gods. In accordance with you intelligence and hard work, the earning follows. You cannot get more or less than that. If you hurt someone you will be hurt back. If you help someone you will be helped back. If you follow the four principles you will keep your Karma good. Those who violate these principles are evil. The world can be understood as a battle between good and evil. You have to choose your path carefully. The good have to be chosen as friends while the evil have to be chosen as enemies. Then the evil have to be defeated by martial arts and that is the first chamber of Shaolin.
Everyone gets the fruit of their own Karma, so you should not blame anyone for what happens to you. It is your own good and evil Karma that returns to you from present and previous births. Most people oscillate between good and evil. To avoid evil requires a path like Shaolin. Many martial artists are tempted to misuse their power. They defeat others for the money or victory. It is not right to misuse your power. It will reduce your balance of good deeds and you will go to hell. If you inflict pain on anyone, that pain comes back to you. The connections of Karma are complex and involve many people in place and time. For example, if you gave someone poison to drink in the previous birth, the same person will give you poison in a later birth.
There is justice in the universe. You have the intelligence to choose between good and evil, and in accordance the consequences follow in heaven, hell and on the earth. Now understand the key questions, ‘Why should we fight then? Is that not hurting someone?’ The answer to that is the world is a battle. The battle is eternal. Sometimes in the battle the good win, and sometimes the evil win. The battle continues. Suppose the enemy comes to hurt you. There is no magic power to defeat the enemy. You have to defeat the vicious hurters yourself by martial arts. You have to protect the good and destroy the evil. This is the purpose of martial arts. The more skilled you become, the better you will be at battle. The battle has to be fought with intelligence, Mantras and physical strength.
Each martial artist has a Mantra or spell. We believe that the Mantras are higher order sounds. These have the power to protect the friends and defeat the enemies. The Mantra source is the Buddha, and that is the origin of martial arts. When we do the Mantra that the Buddha has graciously given, we reach the level of the Buddha. This takes long years of repetition of the Mantra. When the count of the Mantra is complete the Mantra becomes perfected and reveals its full power. By the chanting of the Mantra we get prosperity and victory. The Mantra also awakens the intelligence or the thinking power. The Mantras should be chanted at all times according to the action undertaken. You should be able to work comfortably with the Mantras. Mantras are like weapons and the enemies are destroyed.
Let us understand who the enemies are. The obvious answer is those that violate the four basic principles. The enemies are thus the violent, the liars, the sexual sinners and the thieves. Suppose there is no law. Then anarchy will rule. Evil people will hurt others and steal wealth. There will be no safety and fear will prevail. Now suppose there is a law. Then the people will be at peace and safe from the offenders. For the implementation of the law, martial arts are required. While in the physical plane, there are weapons and a system of law and order, in the astral plane things are different. It is in this astral plane that the martial artist fights.
The astral plane is the higher consciousness. It is something like waking up. The whole world can be seen superimposed as though in a dream. We can also sense the astral plane in meditation. The master awakens his disciple to the astral plane by the power of the Mantra. The disciple can then perceive the astral plane by all the five senses. The five senses are smell, taste, sight, feeling and hearing. It is in this plane that the battle is fought and has to be won.
Friends and enemies have to be defined mathematically. The right hand is the healing hand and is to be shown to the friends. The left hand is the hurting hand and has to be shown to the enemies. By this method the friends are saved and the enemies are destroyed. Now you have to be very careful in defining enemies. You have to classify them according to their Karma and not according to your emotions. You should not let love and hatred interfere or bias you. Most people are ignorant and have a mixture of good and evil deeds. They are caught in the vice-grips of emotions and attachment. For them there is no way out of this emotional whirlpool or storm. The master however can help you to get out of this hell. That is by teaching you the difference between right and wrong. The enemies are then defined and defeated. You can group them as violent, liars, sexual sinners and thieves. The other aspect that has to be followed is teaching the disciples to avoid these four mistakes. You have then corrected the ignorant and got them to the right path.
Let us be more practical about this. Suppose you have been the victim of many wrongs. Then the culprits have to be defined as enemies. An objective defining does not mean that you have no dear ones. All have dear ones, some that help you and some dear ones may hurt you occasionally. You have to forgive those that are dear to you and bring them to the right path. This is done by including them in the right hand. Then there are those that have wronged you to such an extent that it is impossible to forgive them. Such people are enemies and are included in the left hand. After this definition you have to leave it to the Mantras. The Mantras will save the friends and defeat the enemies. The most important fact is that all your associations should be defined, either as friends or as enemies. No one has to be left out.
After defining enemies and friends, we have allotted them to the appropriate hand. Now let us see the fighting methods. The first is the physical method on the astral plane. You should be able to kill your enemies by martial arts fighting techniques. When they die in the astral plane they die on the apparent plane as well. This method is very much like fighting someone in a dream or in imagination. You should be able to see yourself move and fight just as if it is real. This astral plane is at a level higher than the apparent universe. That is because it covers not only the life, but also the afterlife. Just as the skills are learnt on the physical plane, these are learnt and applied to the astral plane as well. It can be explained as doing action while established in meditation. The support to this is Mantra. With the Mantra you become easily established in action while in meditation. You can then recreate the state even in the ordinary tasks of life. While in action you have to stay in meditation on the astral plane. When in meditation you have to be active on the astral plane. Action is then a form of meditation.
The second fighting method is Mantras. The Mantras applied to the left hand will destroy the enemy. You should patiently fight till all enemies are defeated. If you chant the Mantra, every one hundred and eight times you will experience victory. This should take an hour at the most. You should chant Mantras for six hours a day. This should give you four victories at least, the remaining two hours being for food and cleaning-up. The life should be given to perfect a few Mantras. For those that chant Mantras after death, there is no rebirth. The rest of them take birth again.
The third fighting method is truth lines. A truth line is chosen to be repeated. If applied to the left hand, the truth line will defeat the enemies. For example, ‘Don’t steal.’ repeated will defeat thieves. Truth lines repeated have the same power as Mantras. These should be done for up to two hours a day other than Mantras. The truth lines can be selected from a dream as well. With these three methods, physical, Mantras and truth lines the martial artist is the nemesis of his enemies.
The second chamber is, ‘Give food, water, medicines and things like that.’
All through our life we take things from others. Many times we have taken food, water, medicines and the like. This is not only in the present birth but also in the previous births. This creates a Karmic debt because we have to return what we have taken from others. In order to repay that debt we take birth again. The life is of a hundred years. The afterlife is eternal if you attain Nirvana. So it makes sense to take the Karmic debts seriously and avoid rebirth.
Once again there are two levels where this chamber can be followed. These levels are physical and astral. There is only one reality on earth and that is pain. It is the duty of every human being to stop the pain. One kind of pain is hunger and thirst. When you give food and water this pain ends. Let us assume that when you were ignorant, you inflicted pain on some living creature. This pain will come back to you in the present or future lives when the Karma fructifies. If you follow the second chamber you will have destroyed the pain of some living being. As a consequence the Karmic balance will shift in your favor and the pain you have inflicted will get cancelled out.
The astral level is learnt by following the chamber in meditation. After some practice you can do it all day long, even when occupied with everyday tasks. You have to kind of keep on pouring the food out. Or you can call it making an ocean of food. This food is consumed by the dead and by the Gods. Wherever you have taken food, water or medicines you will see that place in meditation. In that place you are indebted. By giving in meditation the debt ends. As a consequence there is no rebirth.
Let us consider medicines. Medicines relieve us from a lot of pain. Hence giving medicines is a good way to accumulate virtue. Suppose some poor person is suffering from a
