About this ebook

A collection of Traditional rhyming and scanning poetry covering a wide range of subject matter. The meaning of the poems in the main and in individual verses is left very much up to the reader, rather as the reader of a novel paints their own pictures of the characters, only loosely guided by the Author's description. I accept that the true meanings in the individual poems is completely out of my control. With poems about Monastery Life, Fairies and Tramps you may wonder what is coming next.

Poetry of Many Things - James Hathersage

    A Bone in the Garden.

    ––––––––

    Digging in my garden,

I found a long, fine bone,

And took it to the house to wash it clean,

Then as it dried out in the sun

A leg bone of a handsome stag

    that strode the forest tracks,

And leapt the rushing, river’s breadth with ease,

    In each, woodland clearing

it would strike a regal pose,

Then melt between the noble, forest trees.

    -

The passing years they weakened then

    that stalwart, sturdy frame,

Till fleet of foot no more, he turned to prey,

Brought down by some pack of hungry,

    Disrespecting wolves,

Dismembered, all his bones were born away.

    -

And now perhaps I have unearthed

    this piece of history,

Like me he would have heard

    our church bell chime,

Thus as I dream and contemplate,

It could of course be true,

A link that’s joined me to another time.

A Delay at the Country Railway Station.

    ––––––––

There is just one little problem

    on this lovely summers day,

The ten fifteen has suffered a delay,

    I’m waiting on the platform

In the Wealded wilds of Kent,

And now I’ve extra time to while away.

    -

I gaze down at the polished track

    that curves past distant trees,

Imagining some smoke, my mind to please,

    But nothing in the
