    Natasha Romanova...

You have to introduce yourself? Gustaf exclaims on the other end of the phone. It’s me!

Natasha stares at the phone screen. Gustaf’s marked face is glowing at her. The mouth that isn’t smiling and the thin lips. Why did she pick that particular photo?

I... well, it’s the middle of the night...

It’s alright sweethear... Nat. It went well. The concert, I mean. In case you were wondering.

    Why should I be...

The press release called me ‘The Nordic Virtuoso’. First person from icy Sweden to play Carnegie Hall.

    Good.

But hey, I have to get going. Or rather, I need to get some sleep. Tomorrow, Boston is calling, haha.

    Symphony Hall?

Yes, that’s what it’s called. Alright, miss you, kisses and sleep well.

It’s five in the morning, and Natasha Romanova throws her iPhone Xs as far away in the big bed as she dares. She doesn’t know if she’s dreaming or if Gustaf’s voice can still be heard from the phone.

    She couldn’t care less.

    Was it always like this?

    Probably.

But surely, it must have been different at first?

    Stop lying to yourself.

Natasha tosses and turns in bed. She considers getting up, but decides against it. It’s cold. The February sun, if it even bothers to make an appearance, does not manage to heat up the giant flat. The chill makes its way in through the beautiful but poorly insulated windows. There have always been excuses for staying in the old luxury flat. Beautiful, but impractical.

And we do prefer beautiful things, don’t we, Nat? as Gustaf always says when someone comments on the far too large size of the flat, or the chilly floors.

Art Nouveau! he usually exclaims in a dramatic voice. He gestures wildly to the arched windows with the mullions down the middle, past the semicircular tiled stove with the flourished pattern and the stucco above the mirrored doors, and concludes by pointing to the Steinway grand piano in the middle of one of the drawing rooms. Gustaf usually clicks his tongue and theatrically says: Here you can find the mood, here you can achieve creativity and growth. The soul needs beauty. Then he usually puts his arm around Natasha and says with his bass voice: In this flat we shall live, and in this flat we shall die.

It already feels as if I’m dead. Or halfway there anyway."
