    Chapter One

We’re off on holiday! You’ll be aces without us, won’t you, sis? Tristan pecked Felicia’s cheek before giving her a brotherly squeeze. Don’t get in any trouble while we’re gone. We’ll only be away about a fortnight.

Felicia rolled her eyes as she munched on a cucumber sandwich. With a touch of annoyance, she swiped at the crumbs clinging to her lips and brushed them off her blouse. Oh, I’ll have oodles of fun tidying up, hoovering the house and such, without you two underfoot. No worries. Don’t quaff down too much alcohol or get into too many knickers. She continued stirring her pot of boiling potion. Simultaneously sad and happy to see the twins leave for a couple weeks, Felicia leaned over and returned the kiss.

Percy, the older of the twins by a couple minutes, tweaked her chin. He was much too handsome for his own good. Both her twin brothers were, but Percy had the devil in his eyes and today, he was impeccably turned out. The ladies in whatever bawdry establishments they frequented wouldn’t stand a chance. Don’t miss us too much.

Why should I miss you boneheads? Go have fun at your convention. Stop worrying so much, or everyone will think you’re the mother hen. Truth was, she shouldn’t miss their shenanigans, but she already dreaded being alone with just the ghosts for company.

It’s just that we know you. Since Mum died you think you have to watch our every move. But we’re twenty-one, now, and all grown up. Tristan saluted at the oil-painting picture of their parents that hung askew on the wall.

Then don’t go. Stay here and miss the convention. Doesn’t make any difference to me.

Not on your life! We wouldn’t miss this for all the warty toads in England. Percy and Tristan, just twenty-one year old kids, leapt into the air and high-fived each other.

Grandpa Basil appeared out of nowhere and floated over to the twins and then hiccoughed in their faces and the windows rattled. Sow your wild oats. About time one of you ensures the family name will live on. Doesn’t look like your sister plans to procreate.

No one was surprised that Grandpa Basil hiccoughed as his hiccoughs were wont to shake the house all night at times. Once, they surely been mistaken for a great earth shake, even scaring the village people. The poor dear had died of a severe case of the hiccoughs, having hiccoughed for almost a year straight before keeling over in the mashed potatoes at the dinner table one evening. At times they found him comical and at others, they were merely annoyed at his offensive behaviour.

Nor was anyone surprised that he was concerned about his progeny. Family meant everything to him and he still considered himself the head of the house, even if Felicia paid the bills and made sure the house didn’t fall apart.

A moment later, Aunt Perpetua arose from the floor and tsk-tsked as she stared down her long, pointy nose through her glasses. Felicia should be the one going on holiday. She’s an old maid and will die alone if she doesn’t get out to meet some handsome bloke. Back me up on this Basil.

Felicia bit back a moan and stared at the old ghost, wondering if a ghost truly needed her wire rimmed glasses to see. She also wondered why the ghosts continued to team up on this annoying issue when they argued about everything else under the sun. Unfortunately, the desert of her love life was the one place where they agreed.

Not since Jeremy Knowles had she kissed a man—really and truly kissed one, that is.

Remembrances of her first love wrapped her in warm fuzzies. It was about this time of year, in the
