So, what happened to the money? Alexander smiles and opens his laptop. The money from Célie? He tries to sound nonchalant, but I don't buy it. He gives Sophia an awkward thumbs up when she quietly shapes her lips into a question: the usual?

Sophia walks over to us with two glasses of Pol Roger for me and two glasses of red for Alexander. She winks at me as she puts the red wine down on the table. "The food will be here any minute. We have prepared it for you. Sofia laughs and sways her hips as she walks back towards the kitchen.

"I let it happen." I decide to take the bait. Maybe it will add to the story. I lean back in the sofa. The sofa and Alexander's armchair seem to be reserved for us and our weekly sessions.

What? Alexander sounds surprised.

Alex is probably just pretending, I’m sure this is what he wanted to know.

"Well, you probably wonder how I let everything go this far? Where did Liam go? What happened to him when he agreed to everything like this? I lean forwards and put a hand on Alexander's knee.

He sits with his legs wide apart behind the oval sofa table. He looks at my hand, then at me. Alexander doesn’t move his knee. I let my hand rest there for a while. I squeeze his knee and then I put both hands in my lap when Sophia comes back with a plate of meatballs and mashed potatoes for Alexander. I’ll top your glasses up later, she says quietly. When Alexander grabs his knife to cut his food, I see that his hand trembles.
