Eric has a sip of the non-alcoholic mulled wine, looks up from his phone and lets his gaze wander over the rustic cabin and the twenty-two sugar-crazed ten-year-olds and six tired parents in it. When he put his hand up to be a volunteer at the school’s Christmas party, he had mostly done it to make sure that the school stuck to the budget and that they didn’t waste the money on dumb stuff. One look at the ongoing party told him that he had failed miserably. There are disco balls attached to the ceiling and they blink enough to cause an epileptic seizure. The windows are covered in fake snow and the room is decorated in hundreds of Christmas lights that change colour every two seconds. Loud pop music pours out of the speakers and even if the party has just started, he already wishes that it was over.

Eric looks at the kids on the dance floor and spots Felix’s blond head. He sees that he is having fun
