GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE AT INDEPENDENCE
T
he structure of Nigerian government at independence from the colonial Britain in 1960 was as follows:
Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe: Governor-General and later became president.
Alhaji Balewa: Prime Minister, both at the executive level.
Dr Azikiwe’s NCNC political party and Alhaji Balewa’s NPC political party were in coalition or synergy with NCNC as a junior partner to NPC. The prime minister and his council of ministers (cabinet) dominated the affairs of government while the president acted as a watch dog without
