About this ebook

Composed from the words of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, this book tells us that the Spirit is the only eternal thing within us. All the rest are transitory and evolutionary. This is the true quest of our lives, the goal that we seek, the home for which we yearn.

    INTRODUCTION

This book is a compilation created from seven talks given by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi between 1977 and 1998. It is not a verbatim transcription, but rather a selection of prime excerpts with some gentle editing added.

No important words have been changed. There has been no paraphrasing or rewording. Some repetition has been removed. Some examples, stories and side remarks have also not been included. Sentences have sometimes been shortened and some small words added for the sake of clarity. Throughout, care has been taken to preserve the core message. Full explanations of sometimes complex topics have been preserved.

In much the same manner that an editor might approach a fresh volume from a noted author, this book has been prepared with the same care, respect – and joy.

The spoken word often differs from our written language. Each has its own virtues and strengths. Shri Mataji commented on this and has given us some guidance when moving Her words from the stage to the page.

In short, our aim in creating this book has been the pursuit of clarity, to fully take in what She has told us on a single topic, even though years pass between each chapter. Each time She told us more.

Shri Mataji gave more than three thousand recorded talks in cities and villages around the world. For each audience there was special attention in accordance to their age, nationality, occupation or deepest concern. Our guide in editing, we hope, has been respect for the nuances of Her message.

Because some things do not survive the transition to print and because the intonation of the voice and the expression of the face can say as much as the spoken words, we encourage the reader to return to the full recording. A list of the talks used can be found on the final pages of the book.

We hope, however, that this small volume will be a new window, a way of understanding Shri Mataji’s guidance and a vehicle for imbibing Her wisdom.

    1. WHAT IS THE SPIRIT?

The Spirit is the only eternal thing within us. All the rest are transitory and evolutionary.

What is yoga? In simple words, it is taking your attention to the Spirit. This is yoga.

What does the Kundalini do? She raises your attention and takes it to the Spirit.

Only after knowing the Spirit, can you know God, not before that. That is why all religions have failed.

The attention has to be on the Spirit and that cannot be there unless and until something happens within you. Those who have
