Mr. Greene pushed his pillow up against the window and nestled his cheeks into the soft, foamy fabric. Klamath Falls lay happily an hour behind him. Within six or seven hours, he would be arriving in Portland, and Lily would be waiting for him, standing in the shade under the platform's roof. It was a pleasant thought and he closed his eyes.
The next moment, Greene felt a jarring bounce to his seat. When he looked around, he saw that a heavy-set man had plopped into the seat next to him. The man's shirt was damp with sweat and each time he belched, he sent a cloud of whiskey-breath in Greene's direction.
Long time, no see,
he said.
Mr. Greene knew him as Irwin, a law officer who he couldn't abide.
Aren't you going to welcome me aboard? I had to run to catch this train.
Greene ignored him and closed his eyes again.
Burge is on board. We had a drink together. I thought you would want to know. I hear you two have history.
Greene said nothing and kept his nose buried in the pillow.
