    TAMIA

How long can one-person talk? Tamia sighed, trying her best not to look out the window at the beautiful blue sky and moving clouds. Why is he still talking? This is what she got. Everyone said she was beautiful enough to be a model at 5’8" with caramel skin, long black hair, and slanted eyes. Did she listen? No! She wanted to show the world she was more than just a pretty face.

Every month and twice each quarter, she regretted her decision to become a certified public accountant. Having to sit through these boring meetings. Her boss was still droning on and on about this quarter’s performance. Her eyes slowly shifted to the floor and then to the ceiling windows. Her gaze lingered outside the window for only a moment before she refocused on the meeting. She knew better than to be caught slipping. Plenty of people wanted her job as Associate Vice President. As the only black woman in upper management, she had to stay on top of her game.

After what seemed like an eternity, they finally broke for lunch. She wanted to run screaming from the building but thought that might be a bit dramatic. The minute she exited the building and felt the wind against her face, she relaxed. She moved her long legs very quickly, headed to her favorite little deli, which was only a couple blocks down. She made it to the deli ordered her favorite sandwich, a corned beef Rueben, and was heading back to the office when the wind picked up briskly. She looked around but no one else seemed to notice. She did not remember seeing anything on the nightly news about high winds. Yet she felt like she was in her own personal tornado. The wind was swirling all around her. She felt it on her face, moving under her skirt, against her stocking- clad legs. She felt the wind scraping against her right shoulder blade, swirling, and moving. A moment of sharp pain at her shoulder blade and then the wind vanished. Her heart was racing, and her hands were shaking. What had just happened to her? It must have been only in her mind because when she looked up, she was back at her office building.

She returned to the meeting with a few minutes to spare but unlike that morning when she desperately wanted to gaze out the window, her concentration was broken by a tingling in her right shoulder blade.

After work, Tamia raced through the door of her eleventh-floor condo, rushing to her bedroom. She stripped down to her bra and panties and walked over to the floor length mirror, where she turned around slowly, afraid to see what was on her shoulder. Her eyes widened as she noticed a mark that looked like three swirling circles. What the hell! She knew her body well and knew that when she left for work this morning, she did not have this mark! It had the appearance of a beautiful tattoo, but she did not have any tattoos. She wanted one but was a big baby when it came to pain. She used her left hand to reach over her right shoulder to touch the spot. It was real but how did it get there? She removed her remaining pieces of clothing and jumped in the shower. Maybe it was just dirt. She scrubbed herself down from head to toe, but the mark was still there. With a deep sigh, she decided to let this mystery go until after she ate.

Belly full, she looked around her spacious condo. With an open floor plan, she could take in everything at once. Her beautiful kitchen with stainless-steel appliances, her elegant formal dining room that she never used, and her large living room with modern furniture. She fell in love with the place when she walked through the door and saw the floor-to-ceiling windows that led out to the balcony. When she saw the second balcony off the master suite, it was a done deal.

She refused to rely on her looks to get her the things in this world that she wanted. She worked during high school and then worked her way through college, where she graduated with honors before working her way up the corporate ladder. Getting her master’s degree and CPA license along the way.

Tamia tried to be smart with her money and had saved up a nice nest egg. She decided to sit on her luxurious couch, one of the few things she had splurged on for her home, with a wine glass in her hand and the wine bottle sitting on the table As a thirty-five-year-old single woman, she hadn’t done too bad for herself. With her busy work schedule, she did not have a lot of free time. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been on a date and knew if she tried to recall the last time she had had sex, she might need a second bottle of wine to dull the realization of just how long it had been. The only person who touched her private parts was her and, sadly enough, she was sometimes too tired to touch them. She wanted to find her knight in shining armor but with every promotion, her job required more and more of her time. She worked long hours during the week and worked from home on the weekends. She knew her life had to change. She did not want to spend the rest of her life alone and she wanted children. Right now, she was a single, successful woman, that had to be good enough.

With a nice buzz, she rose to go to bed, the marks on her shoulder long forgotten. She cleaned up after herself and went to lie down. Snuggled comfortably in her king-size bed, she decided she would sleep in for once. After all, tomorrow was Saturday. It did not take long before Tamia had fallen asleep.

She woke suddenly to the feeling of hands on
