    Foreword

So much of our world is strange and hard to fully comprehend, from creatures of complex design to natural formations of plant and stone. Who knows what lies out beyond our solar system, or within the deeper bowels of our own planet for that matter? Science can’t always explain everything but then again, neither can religion. It’s possible that at some point, in time, humankind must set aside both science and religion, because neither will explain what we may encounter in our future. It has long been thought that a realm exists between science and faith that our ancient forefathers called mysticism. It all but ruled the dark ages. There are many myths and legends of wizards with powerful stones and crystals that controlled the fate of man in many cultures. Consider the ancient Oracle of Greece; many traveled the world to seek its wisdom. Its accuracy was undeniable. Over the centuries, mysticism has been forgotten but that doesn’t mean it was never real, or that it doesn’t exist in some other form today. Perhaps it is some level of science we have yet to rediscover. Nobody would argue that we have far removed ourselves from our distant past. We have become ignorant of what was once our world’s ancient ways of life. Much of it was lost by the end of the dark ages. Over time, we ignorantly deny it. Who is to say that mysticism or some other new finding won’t someday dictate the very laws of physics in our fascinating world? The word Wormwood means bitter or toxic, its name resides in the Holy Scriptures. I believe it is there for a reason. When thinking of world disasters, it makes a person consider all things with a sober and logical frame of mind. So, I dare ask this question to those who are filled with bigotry.

In a time of great peril, does it really matter if the hand extended to help is straight, gay, lesbian, or transgender? Black, white, Asian, Latino, human or mechanical?

Should a time come in which mankind can find neither comfort nor protection; all that will remain for humanity will be hope.

"It will come from above then water and blood shall flow.

Screams shall fill the sky in a time of both prophecies and laws.

So pray if there is time but fight the web of disaster that grows.

Seek out the balance, for terror rises when Wormwood falls."

    Dragon Prophecy

    Chapter One

    Death’s Door

Singe bent down and nuzzled Sunburst. When she did, there was a slight stirring. Brimstone also noticed and realized the young dragon had begun breathing again, it was weak and labored but he was breathing. Singe gasped and said to her mate, It’s been over an hour, are you thinking what I’m thinking? Brimstone looked over at Starr and saw the young man’s chest rising and falling with breath once again. His skin color had returned to normal. Brimstone’s eyes bulged in amazement as he recalled an ancient dragon prophecy and knew it was what Singe had been thinking.

"Ash, listen to me, Phoenix spoke with a soft rumble into her knight’s mind as she nudged her away, Turn around and look." Slowly, Ash pulled away from her dragon and turned.

At first, she thought her eyes were deceiving her. She rubbed them multiple times to clear her vision from the tears. How is this possible? she gasped, as her mind was locked in total disbelief at what she was seeing. Logic told her it was impossible, yet she was witnessing it!

Eric sat on the sofa. It’s my fault; I never should have adopted the boy. The oath clearly states that a knight is never to father children.

Claude paused from dialing and replied, Eric, you didn’t exactly father the boy, you just raised him at his mother’s dying request.

Eric shrugged his shoulders. What’s the difference? I allowed myself to become emotionally attached, just as I have with you. Isn’t that the real reason the oath clearly states that we are not to marry or father children? Gay men were chosen to be knights because our lives are expendable. Our deaths won’t leave children orphaned or widows grieving.

Claude softly responded, Eric, if you’re looking for a reason to pin the blame for his death on yourself; then yes. But we are all knights, Starr was a knight, and sometimes we die, it happens. I don’t think anyone should blame themselves for experiencing love. Eric didn’t respond. Claude was still fighting back his tears as he continued, Is it not love that drives all of us to do what we need to do? Is it not love that makes us accept our fate and risk our lives to save others? Eric stared at Claude, his partner was right. Love was the source behind their mission. Love was a powerful thing; it inspired, motivated, and fueled determination. No matter how the chips fell, no matter how hard the struggle, in the end all that really mattered was love. Without it, life would have little purpose.

Outside, Starr was lying on his back but had bent a knee upward and Sunburst was moving a wing. Ash tried to call for Eric and Claude but her voice wouldn’t respond. She took several deep breaths and after several attempts she finally managed to scream Eric! Claude’s finger was about to punch the last digit of the Sheriff department’s number when he and Eric heard the transgender knight’s scream.

Claude canceled the call as Eric groaned, Oh geez, what now? They opened the front door and immediately saw Sunburst and Starr stirring. Claude’s hand went to his mouth as tears filled his eyes once more. Without hesitation, Eric rushed out and dropped to his knees beside Sunburst. He saw the shotgun pellets lying in the bloody grass in front of the young dragon. The wound on Starburst’s chest had completely healed over.

Claude dashed over to Starr and knelt beside him. Don’t move, lay still until you regain your strength, he softly instructed. Eric examined where the shotgun blast had torn a hole in the dragon’s chest. It had completely closed, leaving no sign of injury, not so much as a scar.

Sunburst attempted to roll over onto his feet. Stay still, Eric gently instructed the young dragon. What happened, what changed? Eric asked, as he looked toward Brimstone with tears of joy in his eyes.

Brimstone gave a quick look to Singe as he spoke, We believe it’s the dragon prophesies being fulfilled once again. Eric gave a quick glance over to Starr then stared down at Sunburst once more.

After a moment, he looked back up to Brimstone. Tell me, tell me what it says? Eric pleaded nervously.

Brimstone spoke telepathically so that all could hear, "Touched by the hand of God beyond the veil of darkness, resurrected with holy power, from death’s door shall they rise up, a knight and his dragon unlike any that have lived upon the Earth. Even the great ice giants shall bow. Give them honor for they shall be… the Immortal Titans."

Immortal Titans, what does that mean? Eric inquired as he held Sunburst’s head in his lap.

The weak dragon slowly opened his eyes. I’m not exactly sure but dragon-kind has been awaiting the immortal titans for centuries, Brimstone replied.

Singe moved closer and added, According to ancient beliefs, they will have incredible power that comes from God himself. Both mankind and dragon-kind are to honor them.

Brimstone was silent for a few seconds then with a soft rumble, he commented, I never once in my all my days thought that my son would be an immortal titan.

Primus, what happened? Sunburst asked as he looked over toward Starr.

You were injured; just lay still a bit longer, Eric replied soothingly.

Starr suddenly cried out, Sunburst! as he regained consciousness and attempted to get up.

Easy, Starr, your dragon is okay, Claude told him. Lay back down a few minutes.

Ash walked slowly over to Starr still having a problem wrapping her mind around what was transpiring. She finally allowed herself to softly mutter the one word that was wedged hard in her throat, Resurrection. It was beginning to sink in. There is magic in dragons, she mumbled to herself as she recalled hearing what many of the knights had often stated. Ash considered herself to be a logical thinker but what was happening here was beyond logic. It wasn’t magic; it was an answer to prayer. It was a miracle!

Just south of Charlotte, an accident was backing up traffic for over twelve miles and growing. We’ve identified the driver as Rex Strongbow from South Carolina. Alcohol has been confirmed as a contributing factor, Highway Patrolman Rick Anderson called back to the dispatcher. An ambulance silently left the scene carrying one deceased victim from the accident.

Affirmative, bridge support damaged and needs an inspection to verify safety. Another highway patrolman communicated with the department of transportation.

Officer, can you tell us who the driver was and any details of the accident? a reporter shouted to a nearby officer, as her camera crew arrived on the scene of the accident.

Not at this time, the family has yet to be notified, the officer replied as he moved toward the bridge abutment to get a second look at the crushed pickup truck. It was obvious that the man had been speeding. There were no signs on the road or in the grass that he had touched the brake before impact.

Ash, may I ask you to go inside and bring out a couple bottles of cold water? Claude requested as he turned to face their newest knight.

Sure, Ash replied, as she turned around and rushed into the house. A minute later, she knelt beside Starr and handed the water bottles to Claude.

Thank you, Claude said, as he tossed one of the water bottles over to Eric.

Starr, I’m so sorry, this is entirely my fault, Ash said, as her eyes filled with tears.

Claude placed his hand on her shoulder as he spoke, Don’t say that Ash, it’s not true.

Ash refused to accept his words. If I hadn’t come here, none of this would have happened, she sobbed.

Lady Strongbow, nobody is to blame, sometimes crazy stuff just happens, Starr said, as he pulled himself up on his elbows then took the bottle of water from Claude. After drinking some water himself, Sunburst rolled over and got his feet up under his body.

"Lady Strongbow, Sunburst spoke softly into her mind, we will be fine. So stop crying, you are a knight, remember?" Ash tried to laugh in the midst of her tears.

She got up and headed back toward Phoenix as she wiped her eyes and said, My dad is such a stupid jerk.

Starr’s eyes flashed and Claude noticed it. What is it? Claude inquired, as he looked intently at his son.

Pop, her father is dead. I can’t explain how I know it, but I do, the golden knight exclaimed in a whisper.

Claude looked back to assure himself that Ash had not heard what Starr had said. Let’s just let things take their course, if it’s true she’ll find out soon enough, Claude replied softly. Telepathically, Claude shared Starr’s premonition with Eric. After a short time, both Starr and Sunburst were on their feet and acting as if nothing had happened.

This is just too strange for words, Eric whispered to Brimstone.

His dragon nodded, then replied, I agree, Primus, but the immortal titan prophesy is the only explanation I can give you. They were gone from us for over an hour, they were dead, my knight, and you know it. Brimstone and Singe went into the forest with Sunburst, as Eric, Claude and Starr said goodbye to Ash and Phoenix.

A few minutes later, Claude noticed Starr looking out the front window with a blank stare. He walked closer and asked, Is everything okay?

Starr turned and smiled. I’m not sure. I somehow feel different but I don’t know exactly in what way.

Eric looked over at them and offered some consolation, It’s been a very difficult day, things will seem more normal tomorrow. Perhaps we should all just get some rest. Claude nodded in agreement. Minutes later, Claude was turning out lights and locking the doors for the evening.

Early the next morning, Starr called out, Pop! You need to answer the phone!

Claude gave Eric a quick kiss and headed for the kitchen to make their morning coffee as he spoke, The phone isn’t ring…. he started to reply just as the phone rang. Creepy, he muttered to himself. Eric slipped on his robe and headed downstairs. Hello? Claude answered. He was silent for a few minutes as he listened. I understand Ash; take as much time as you need. What? No, tell your mother she’s wrong. How do I know? I know because you were here with us when the accident happened. Starr had a vision or something and told me he had died. That was before he was even able to stand up. I didn’t want you to know before it could be confirmed. Okay, talk to you later. Bye. Claude ended the call and turned to Eric who was now standing behind him. Ash needs to take some time off to deal with her father’s death. Also, her mother has accused her of killing her father and her sister Gina is taking his death very badly, he explained the call.

Eric nodded and looked around for Starr, Where’s our boy?

Claude started the coffee as he replied, I haven’t seen him. I’m guessing he’s still in bed.

The hair on the back of Eric’s neck stood up so he went back upstairs and knocked on Starr’s bedroom door. Starr, is everything okay? he asked.

Not really but come on in, Starr answered in a reluctant tone.

Eric opened the door and stepped back from what he saw. Starr! he softly exclaimed, as he stared in complete amazement.

Starr stated, Yeah, weird huh? as he stood up from his bed wearing only his briefs. Eric was without words. Starr had grown tremendously in height, width and muscle mass just over night. The young knight now had more muscle mass than Big Carl. My armor doesn’t fit anymore and neither do my clothes. My briefs are extremely tight too, Starr complained, as he avoided eye contact with his dad.

It’s okay; we can get Ted to make you a new suit of armor. How do you feel? Eric asked.

Fine, completely fine, but… Starr started to say something then drifted off.

What is it son? Eric encouraged him to complete his statement.

Starr finally looked up and said, I don’t know exactly. I just feel the need to get away for a while.

Eric stepped over and embraced his son as he spoke softly to him, Just say where and I’ll get Claude to make reservations for us.

Starr gently pulled back, No Dad, not all of us. Just Sunburst and I, we need some time to deal with all of this.

Eric looked puzzled. All of what exactly?

The young knight sat back down on the bed. My resurrection, these visions, incredible dreams I had last night, and my oversized body, all of it.

Eric sat down beside him. I understand and I’ve got an idea. Why don’t you go to Carlisle and visit with Sir Jamison. I can give him a call. I’m sure he’d love to see you again and he lives in a very remote and quiet region of Cambria.

A smile came to Starr’s face. That sounds great. You know I’ve always had a crush on him, don’t you?

Eric’s face was filled with surprised. No, I didn’t know that. You never told us.

Starr’s smile got brighter. Yeah, well, I do.

Eric put his arm around Starr and said, It’s settled then, I’ll give the silver knight a call. Let’s see, what time is it in Carlisle?

Starr chuckled. You need to hold off on that call for at least eight hours. After a quick embrace, the two of them went downstairs for breakfast.

Sweetie, do you have a really large coffee mug somewhere around here? Eric asked Claude teasingly, as he entered the kitchen with Starr behind him.

What kind of a question is… ah! Claude’s response ended in a gasp as he turned and saw Starr. My word, you’re larger than Big Carl! Claude exclaimed, as he stepped closer and looked their son over.

Look at the size of those muscles, Eric said, as he nodded toward Starr’s arms.

Uh hum, I can see and those arms aren’t the only big muscles he has, Claude commented with a roll of his eyes while blushing.

My clothes don’t fit, Starr said before Claude could ask him why he wasn’t dressed.

I’ll go shopping as soon as breakfast is over, Claude stated as he estimated Starr’s height, waist and chest sizes.

"Eric, are you awake?" Brimstone’s voice rumbled into Eric’s mind.

"Yes, we’re just getting ready to have breakfast," Eric responded.

"How is Starr this morning?" Brimstone then asked.

"Well, my best response would be to say ‘big,’ the young knight is very big," Eric replied, almost jokingly.

It’s interesting that you should say that. You gentlemen may want to step out into the back yard for a moment. Brimstone requested.

Eric motioned his family toward the back door as he spoke, Brimstone would like for us to step outside. They walked out onto the back patio and stopped in amazement.

Whoa! Claude exclaimed, as he saw Sunburst.

The young dragon was now larger than Brimstone, much larger. Starr went over to his dragon, still only dressed in his tight colorful briefs, and said, Well, it seems I’m not the only one that had a growth spurt during the night.

Sunburst bashfully nodded his head and replied, That’s quite an understatement, don’t you think? After they spent some time communicating with the dragons, Eric and Claude went back inside the house. Brimstone and Singe went back into the forest leaving Starr and Sunburst to themselves.

I want to go and visit Sir Jamison and get away from here for a while, do you mind? Starr asked.

Do I mind? I’d love to. I feel like a freak around here, Sunburst replied with a sense of relief. Starr embraced Sunburst and the two softly breathed a sigh of relief as a mysterious aura glowed around them.

That evening, Eric called his dear friend and ancient relative. Hello, the masculine voice of Sir Jamison Hampton answered. Hello Sir Jamison, its Eric Hampton calling from the states! Eric cheerfully began the conversation. Eric explained to Sir Jamison all that had transpired regarding Starr and Sunburst being shot and dying, the resurrection, the immortal titan prophesy, and their incredible overnight growth. Then he asked if the two could come to visit with him for a while in order to get away. They needed some time to themselves. Splendid, weird conditions or not, I’d love to have that handsome lad and his dragon to visit, Sir Jamison replied agreeably.

Eric didn’t tell the silver knight about Starr’s crush on him. He felt it would be better if Starr dealt with that issue in his own time and in his own way. Eric thanked the silver knight then ended the call.

He informed his son that arrangements had been made. Thanks, Dad. I really appreciate it, Starr replied with a smile.

Claude managed to find a few 4XL shirts and pants and boxer shorts at a big man’s clothing store in the city. After a long search, he even managed to find a pair of sneakers, size twenty. Starr tried them on as soon as Claude returned. He was relieved that the clothes fit. Thanks, Pop. I hate to think I’d have to go around wearing overly tight briefs all the time.

Claude smiled and replied, Yeah right, you’re too much like your dad; you’d actually love to run around all the time in your underwear.

Starr chuckled. Well, actually it does feel pretty good, especially in boxer shorts.

Claude shook his head. You guys, he stated, as he cleared out Starr’s old clothes that no longer fit.

Pop, didn’t they have any boxer shorts with a little more color? Starr inquired, as he placed his additional underwear in a drawer.

Unfortunately not in your size, so get used to the conservative look. Personally, I think you look pretty sexy in simple baby blue boxers, Claude teased.

Do you think they’ll catch Sir Jamison’s eye? Starr asked to see what Claude might think of his attraction to the silver knight.

Sir Jamison, oh, I’m sure he’d rather see you buck ass naked, but I think he’ll like them just fine, Claude said modestly then burst out giggling.

Starr hugged his Pop and told him about his long-time admiration and attraction to the knight from Carlisle. You have good taste; he’s handsome, big and strong like you are now, and a real gentleman. Not to mention an intergalactic hero, Claude complemented Starr’s choice in men.

    Then you approve? Starr inquired.

Starr, you are the son of the Primus and his First Knight. We do have high expectations for you but who you’re attracted to… well, that is something that’s out of our hands. Both us just want to see you happy. Do I approve of your choice of Sir Jamison? Personally, I don’t think you could have chosen anyone I’d approve of more. Just don’t rush into anything, you’re still young, Claude said, as he kissed his son on the cheek and hugged him tightly.

As the hug ended, Starr responded, I’m not rushing into anything. I know it’s possible that Sir Jamison may not feel the same way about me.

Claude smiled as he winked then said, I can see that we raised a pretty smart kid. Starr slightly blushed.

Two days later, Starr and Sunburst said good-bye to their parents and headed up into the sky. It’s their first time away from home without us, Singe commented.

Well, Starr went away to college so I can’t exactly say that; yet it feels strange all the same, Claude replied.

Eric chuckled. You two will get over the empty nest syndrome soon enough.

Claude playfully back handed Eric’s shoulder. Maybe, maybe not, he replied jokingly.

Brimstone looked into the sky and said, They are now immortal titans. It is time for them to go out into the world on their own. Everyone nodded in agreement. There was a bright flash high in the sky and the immortal titans vanished. Eric turned back toward the house to hide the tears in his eyes as Claude’s tears flowed freely. The day passed slowly for Eric and Claude; they missed having their son around.

I’m sorry to hear that, Ash. It’ll be okay, the knights haven’t been called for anything so you’re not missing any action. Take care of your sister and yourself. Let us know if we can help in any way. Good-bye, Claude said on the phone as Eric stood nearby listening. Well, Ash’s mom committed suicide last night. Ash is at her sister’s house and they’re working on the arrangements, he explained to Eric.

There sure is a lot of drama in that family, Eric commented.

Claude nodded, then added, Ash is dealing with a lot of guilt; Gina is experiencing a lot of grief, not to mention that they have an old windowed aunt that is mad at both of them for letting this happen. As if either of them could have done anything about it. Anyway, Ash isn’t ready to be called out on knight duty for a while yet.

Eric pulled off his shirt and walked slowly over to Claude. All of this is causing me to experience some anxiety. Any chance I could receive some comforting?

Claude embraced his lover then reached down and unzipped Eric’s pants as he whispered, Perhaps you should first lay on the sofa for some counseling. Eric’s pants hit the floor just as Claude’s hand slid down the front of his lover’s boxer shorts.

Ah, sure, but I may need some serious physical therapy, Eric responded breathlessly.

Claude dropped his own pants and pushed Eric toward the sofa as he replied, Oh really, tell me more.

Ash called a little over two weeks later to say she was ready to return to duty should a call come for the knights. As Eric hung up the phone, he told Claude of Ash’s call. It’s about time. I was beginning to worry about her, Claude commented, as he turned the oven on and began preparing a small beef roast.

She’ll be fine; she’s tougher than you might think, Eric replied, as he removed his shirt and stepped toward Claude.

Oh no, not right now, I have dinner to prepare! Claude refused Eric’s advancement.

So, how long does the roast need to bake? Eric asked, as he stepped out of his pants.

Eric! Claude exclaimed as he blushed.

So, how long does it take? Eric insisted as he removed his boxer shorts and draped them over Claude’s shoulder while standing there naked.

Finally surrendering to Eric’s desires, Claude placed the roast in the oven and replied, It’ll take about an hour, more or less. Eric embraced him and smothered him with a passionate kiss.

An hour later, Claude walked into the kitchen in his underwear and checked on the roast. Eric stepped into his boxer shorts and followed him. "Eric, Claude, I know you two love one another but you should slow it down a little," Singe’s voice rumbled into their minds.

What do you mean? Claude telepathically replied.

"Well, every time you two get aroused it affects Brimstone and I. If you keep it up, we are going to have to raise another youngling." Eric and Claude’s laughter filled the room as Singe’s voice rumbled in their minds, I’m being serious!

Brimstone’s voice then followed, That’s okay guys, I’m actually enjoying myself!

Singe playfully protested, "Brimstone!" Gently Brimstone nuzzled his mate; he loved her just as much as Eric loved Claude.

The days seemed to fly by as Eric and Claude worked around the mansion. They seldom heard from Starr but tried not to push their noses into the young man’s life. What do you think this immortal titan thing is all about? Claude asked his partner, as they worked together to plant some flowers across the front of the house.

Eric had been wondering the same thing. I have no idea but nothing happens without a reason, especially in regards to the dragon prophesies.

Claude stood up and brushed off his knees as Eric packed dirt around the last of the new plants. I’ve got a feeling something really big is about to happen and it’s going to be up to Starr and Sunburst to handle the matter. I just hope they’ll be up to the challenge, Claude stated, as he stepped back to admire their handy work.

Eric nodded and replied, Yeah, me too. He and Sunburst are well-trained, very large and strong now, but still young with little experience.

Claude waited a moment then asked, So, you’ve got that feeling that something major is going to happen as well?

Eric stood and brushed off his pants. Yeah, each day the feeling gets stronger. Call it premonition or gut feeling, it gets a little stronger by the day. Claude stepped over and put his arm around Eric’s waist, more for his own comfort than Eric’s.

After a brief moment of silence, Claude asked, After all we’ve been through with the fall of the church, those fallen angels, and those hard-to-explain wyvern creatures. How do you keep your faith so strong?

Eric glanced up at a passing cloud as he replied, I guess because my faith was never based on the opinions of organized religion, but rather what felt right to me. I trust my heart to tell me what is true and just. I strongly believe that no matter how difficult situations may get, love will somehow always win.

Claude gave a moment of thought to Eric’s words then responded, So, it’s based on your conscience.

Perhaps, Eric replied, then again, perhaps it’s the presence of what the Bible calls the Holy Spirit. Whatever it is, I feel it deep within, yet all around me. Claude’s eyebrows went up slightly, now he knew exactly what Eric was trying to tell him. He too had felt a presence in and around him long before the knights had been called into action. It wasn’t activated or stirred by religious rhetoric or worship rituals; it was much deeper than that. He felt it strongest when motivated by his concern for others. It was definitely powered by love.

With a smile, Claude said, I think I understand. Let’s get cleaned up and I’ll prepare us some lunch. Eric tossed the garden tools into the wheelbarrow followed by his gloves. Eric gave Claude a playful wink as he pushed the wheelbarrow around the house. There wasn’t anything they didn’t share heart to heart, including religion and politics.

As they walked, Claude looked over to Eric as he spoke, In regards to those wyverns, where do you think those creatures came from? They certainly aren’t natural.

Eric glanced over at Claude and replied, I have a hunch. I could be wrong but I don’t think so.

Without hesitation, Claude responded, So, what are you thinking?

Eric sat the wheelbarrow down as he answered, I think the military got some DNA samples of our dragons at some point and time. If you recall, they wanted some of our dragons for themselves but realized it wasn’t possible after we explained that the dragons were sentient beings. Claude nodded that he remembered. Anyway, I think the military set up a genetic lab down there in the bayou somewhere. It’s most likely a very secret place, hidden among the bush, vines and cypress trees. I’m guessing they were unable to contain the creatures and some of them escaped. After some time, they began to procreate and their numbers grew. Apparently, they multiply at a rapid rate, which tells me they most likely mixed the dragon DNA with that of alligators. Gators can lay a very large number of eggs, Eric explained his theory.

Wow, Claude said. I hadn’t thought of that, you may be right. So, do you think the military may still be working on their little project?

Eric tilted his head and replied, I wouldn’t doubt it for a moment. But in a way, I can’t blame them for trying. The bonding we have with our dragons is very special, it’s a wonderful gift.

    Chapter Two

    Avalanche Cometh

Two months went by quietly, then one day the phone rang. Hello, Eric answered. What? Seriously, when? he gasped as Starr’s voice came through the phone. As soon as the call was over, he shouted for Claude.

I’m right here. Who was that on the phone? Claude asked, as he came into the room.

It was Starr. He just told me that Sunburst got word from another dragon that Avalanche, the dragon king is on his way here.

Claude thought for a moment then asked, Why here?

Eric turned and looked at Claude. Star didn’t know, but it can’t be good. He and Sir Jamison will be on their way soon to assist us.

Claude commented, I really don’t wish to face that giant ice dragon again but I sure would like to see our boy. It’s been well over a month since he left. Eric lowered his head and remained silent as the dragon king’s last words haunted his mind, if you fail, I will come for you.

Just after four o’clock the following day, Brimstone called to Eric, He’ll be here soon, I can already sense his approach.

Eric got into his armor as he instructed Claude to take Singe and go hide in the mountains. Why? Claude asked.

Eric responded harshly, Because, if he kills us I don’t want you and Singe here to see it!

Claude’s face turned white with fear as he spoke, I’ll call the knights, they won’t let that happen.

Eric stopped him, No. Do you want us all killed? Do as I ask, please. Claude reluctantly followed his instructions and he rode away on Singe a short time later. Eric and Brimstone waited quietly and with nervous anticipation as hours passed by.

He’s almost here, Brimstone finally said to Eric, as they stood on the back lawn.

Where, I can’t see him? Eric replied as he looked upward.

Brimstone answered, Northeast, on the horizon. Eric could sense concern in his dragon’s tone. Eric focused hard just above the tree line and soon made out the white beast as it approached.

A short time later, the giant ice dragon landed hard and the ground shook. Primus! the king of the dragons growled as he stared down at Eric. "Do you remember what I said the last time we spoke?" Avalanche growled fiercely into the knight’s mind.

Yes, I do. To my knowledge, I have not failed. The environment is cleaner today than it was a hundred years ago. Eric replied.

If you have not failed, then why do you suppose I’m here? the ice giant roared with hostility.

I haven’t a clue, Eric responded in all honesty.

Then I’ll tell you! The nation you humans call China is dumping large amounts of chemical and nuclear waste into a deep ravine within my territory! I knew you humans would never change your ways. Removing pollution from one spot and dumping it in another is not cleaning it up! The mighty dragon’s voice roared in Eric’s mind, clearly saturated with spite for the human species.

I’ll go to them right away and tell them they need to remove it and clean it up at once, Eric quickly offered.

The massive dragon eyed him with contempt. It’s too late for that Primus, you’ve failed! the creature spoke into his mind with a fierce rumble.

Eric stepped back toward Brimstone as fear gripped him. Stay where you are! Brimstone, if you get involved you too shall die. If I kill this human, you may yet survive but if you interfere, I will kill you. Which due to your bonding, your knight will die as well, Avalanche sneered. Eric knew then that the ice giant understood all too well how the bonding worked. The ground suddenly trembled as two large dragons landed fast and hard behind Avalanche. The ice giant turned to eye the two dragons and their knights behind him. Eric moved slightly to the side to see who it was, although he was pretty sure he already knew.

Starr and Sir Jamison saluted him then Starr spoke to the ice giant, You will speak to the Primus with respect! Sunburst had grown to nearly the size of the dragon king and Starr was now slightly over seven feet tall. His son was dressed in new brass plated armor; it gave a golden shine as the sun reflected off of it. He also carried a new broadsword, much larger than his old cutlass.

You have no right to give me orders, human! Avalanche roared, as he turned the rest of the way around to face Sunburst. Eric used the distraction to his advantage and ran to Brimstone.

    Mount up, Brimstone instructed him.

Sunburst stepped closer. You need to understand something, the Primus does not challenge your crown dragon king, but I do! Sunburst stated firmly.

What? Do I hear you correctly? You challenge me? Avalanche replied mockingly.

That I do. The time has come for dragon-kind to have a king they can respect, Sunburst responded fiercely.

The ice giant turned his head and spoke to Eric and Brimstone, I’ll deal with you two shortly.

In that moment, Starr vanished from his saddle and Sir Jamison had Ember to move back. Sunburst charged Avalanche and they collided with fierce roars, biting and clawing. Where is Starr? Why isn’t he helping his dragon in this battle? Eric said to Brimstone, as they watched the two large beast claw and bite at one another.

I don’t know, Brimstone replied, as he marveled at how large and powerful his son had become. Sunburst then turned and took to the air. Avalanche followed and they fought viciously for several minutes as they crisscrossed the sky. Eric and Brimstone moved over to where Sir Jamison and Ember were standing.

Where is Starr, he shouldn’t abandon his dragon during battle? Eric exclaimed to the silver knight. At that moment, Sunburst went into a rapid spin and dove down close to the ice giant. A gush of red streaked across the bluish white ice dragon’s chest.

He hasn’t abandoned his dragon, see? He’s staying cloaked so the dragon king will forget he’s in a fight with a bonded dragon. With Starr staying invisible, that brute will forget it’s two against one, Sir Jamison explained. Avalanche was bleeding badly from the sword cut but still hadn’t seemed to realize his injury was not from a talon. Sunburst went into a spin once more and crossed over the ice giant’s back. Avalanche roared in agony as blood gushed from the base of his left wing. The massive giant was too injured to remain in flight and tumbled wildly toward the ground. The ice giant managed to catch himself just enough to avoid a brutal impact. Avalanche took a moment to recover from the hard landing as Sunburst passed overhead. Sunburst released a fierce display of fire spraying just over the ice giant’s head. As the gold dragon circled around and began to dive again, Avalanche curled his neck and prepared to spray his opponent with his powerful frost breath.

Oh god, no, Sunburst get away from here! Eric shouted just as Avalanche released his powerful stream of frost breath.

Stay out of it, Primus, your boy knows what he’s doing, Sir Jamison stated but not loud enough for Avalanche to hear him. Eric froze in panic. Sunburst suddenly vanished in a flash of light before the frost breath reached him. Almost
