    law.

    Chapter 1

Take some cocaine with your buds?

    Bigger said, No.

Smiley shook his head. You know bud tests dirty for a month. Rock only a few days.

Bigger thrust his palms up and asked, So?

    Smiley said, More buyers.

Bigger glanced away. I don’t sell coke. And this is my last buy.

    Change in thinking?

    Nature’s bounty belongs to all.

Smiley asked, One of your friends addicted?

Bigger shook his head. Personal counseling is available for addiction.

You’ve had complaints about my product?

    Nope.

Smiley stood and said, We’ve known each other since grade school.

Bigger answered, No worries. I won’t be buying from anyone else.

Smiley paced and asked, Then what’s the problem?

I needed money when you invited me in. Not now.

Smiley sat down and asked, Finally got that diploma?

Bigger grinned. I received my Bachelor of Science Degree today. Information Technology is paying off.

Hell of a journey. Coming on board scared off your dad.

Bigger nodded, Mom said he left our family the day I was born.

Smiley said, Lotta help from Little Bit.

Mom worked hard and provided well until she passed. Then all Little Bit.

Smiley rubbed his chin. You never told me how she got her name.

Bigger smiled. Starting to talk, Elizabeth sounded like Little Bit.

Smiley chuckled. Being small, the name stuck.

    Bigger nodded.

    And you’re Bigger.

    Didn’t take much.

Smiley asked, Is Little Bit helping with your IT business?

Bigger said, Little Bit hooked me up with Lacy Dalton’s dress shop. Leonard gave me a Political Action Committee lead.

Smiley asked, Aren’t you living with Little Bit while you’re a college student?

Bigger smiled and said, I have gladly accepted her generosity.

Smiley said, I see why you rented this storage unit.

Bigger said, Right. Little Bit can’t know how I’ve earned the money to finish my degree.

Smiley asked, Excess visitation to your unit hasn’t been a problem?

Bigger said, No. You deliver to me, and I deliver to my clients.

Smiley gestured to his gym bag on the floor by his chair. Wanna sample?

As he handed Smiley a stack of cash Bigger said, No need to sample. Let’s get this done.

Smiley put his bag on Bigger’s battered wooden dinner table. You may be doing the best thing. We all get busted eventually.

Bigger stood, stashed the bag, and locked the old wooden cabinet door. Why’re you still in the business?

A frown brought a sigh from Smiley as he rose from his chair. He said, I don’t have your choices.

Bigger studied Smiley’s face as they walked to the storage unit door. You’ve had a long run. Bigger pulled up the door. Get out while you can.

Smiley frowned. Just doing what I have to do. He shook his head as he walked out.

Bigger yelled at Smiley’s back as he walked away, What’s with the regretful attitude?

    Smiley never looked back.

Bigger noticed a woman driving a black sedan parked across the street.

He grabbed the pull rope and pulled down to lower the storage unit door. The door moved a few inches and stopped. Bigger glanced to his left. A big man held open the door with his left hand. The body builder’s right hand held a pistol aimed at Bigger. Bigger glanced to his right. A tall, slim man stepped in with a pistol aimed at Bigger.

Each was close and moving in. Bigger reached for his pistol. The man on the right side thrust the muzzle of his pistol inches from Bigger’s face. Bigger looked to the left. The big man also had him covered. The sound of a pistol being cocked got Bigger’s attention. The slim man took the slack out of the trigger. A fraction of an inch separated life and death.

The slim man whispered, Yeah. Go ahead and reach for that pistol. Do it. Give me an excuse. The assailant smiled.

Bigger stared at the large muzzle close to his face.

The tall man shouted, Tyrell Holley, you are under arrest. He grabbed Bigger’s arm with his left hand, jerked him around, and shoved his chest against the wall. Put your hands on the wall and spread your legs. You know the position.

Bigger snapped, Aren’t you supposed to have a badge?

    Detective Freeman’s showing you his.

Bigger looked at the big man.

With his pistol still aimed at Bigger with his right hand, Freeman showed his credentials with his left. Atlanta police, Freeman announced. He pocketed
