L’enfant terrible, according to Webster’s Dictionary is "a usually young and successful person who is strikingly unorthodox, innovative, or avant-garde."
Some might consider Rebecca Sverdupe’s behavior more in line with the usual definition from French: a terrible (unruly or incorrigible) child, but we choose Webster’s.
The fleur-de-lis was carried by Joan d’Arc, as well as many others. The symbol is a legend in itself - a lasting emblem of royalty, power, honor, grandeur, faith and unity.
For these reasons, the fleur-de-lis overwritten by l’enfant terrible represents Rebecca Sverdupe well.

One: Angel
July 11, 2017
Paradise Island, Bahamas
Angel Sabrina shied away from the light shining on her face. And she hurt. Well, not hurt so much as a dull ache. Down there.
It was s’posed to be fun! Not like that at all.
Intercourse surely didn’t seem to be all her girlfriends had said. Guess they’re talkin’ out their asses, like I’d’ve been.
She pulled her legs up and dropped her feet to the floor. Sitting up nude, she reviewed her situation. A carelessly ripped, folded paper on the nightstand seemed out of place in the neat, expensive hotel room.
She squinted to read the uneven scrawl. Thanks for the fun, Angel. Hope I can see you next time through. The room’s good til noon so relax in the tub or whatever. Hugs and kisses.
Hugs and kisses! Right! Ya coulda roused me on your way out!
After moving, showering, getting dressed, making a cup of coffee in the in-room Mr. Coffee look-alike, she felt human again. A ride down to the lobby allowed her to slip out without attracting attention.
November, 2017
Four months later, she couldn’t lie to herself any longer. Yeah, girl, you done and got yourself with child. The ideas roiling in her mind were no worse than they had been since the first suspicion—coincident with her missed period—but they were no better, either. No more school, no place to live, no goddam future.
The one friend she’d talked to about the experience—not the result—told her she’d had an arsehole for her first time if he wasn’t focused on making sure she was happy in it. Angel wasn’t sure about that; it had been kind of a scrum on the stage at the end of the Independence Day show, and she’d been as taken with him as he seemed to be with her. But at the end of the day, the lilt and music
in her Caribbean voice hadn’t kept him long enough to say goodbye, so maybe Tammy was right.
December, 2017
She said nothing for another couple of weeks, but then her situation changed. Her father sent her brother and sister out of the small house, gathered her and her mother in the central room.
You’re pregnant.
Not asking. Well, there’s plenty of sign, if he’s looking. And I guess he is. Not gonna lie to him. Yeah.
She feared she hadn’t kept sullen self-pity far
