She currently resides on the picturesque south coast of NSW with her two young daughters and her own real-life gorgeous hero. Finding A Forever Love - Jayne Kingsley

    1

Eva struggled to coordinate her heavy limbs. Her college friends, Sarah and Lauren, had neglected to mention the possibility and regularity of a train strike when they’d talked her into taking this trip to Italy. Happy 21 st birthday to me. Was it wrong that instead of feeling the holiday spirit, she was struggling to get her mind away from the unfinished orders back home? She’d left her Gramps high and dry in London, finishing the five suits in need of tailoring. Here she was, sweaty, hungry and exhausted.

Thank you unreliable Italian Rail system.

Eva, stop daydreaming. You’re the birthday girl! Get excited! Sarah’s grin was a mile wide and she was bouncing along the platform with energy to spare.

Eva dragged a smile into place, eyeing off the stairs with a small sinking of her heart. She really needed to get out and exercise more, sitting in front of a sewing machine or at her desk hand stitching for hours at any given time was great for her arm and hand muscles but not so much for her legs, which were jelly.

Lauren was sporting a similar look to how Eva felt. Sarah, you are the Energizer Bunny. We’re mere mortals. How about giving us a break?

You wait. The minute we get off this platform and you see Vernazza for real you’ll be overwhelmed by its glory and your energy will come rushing back in waves.

Eva hoped her friend was right. Waves of energy sounded really good right about now. Ten minutes later, after trudging up and down stairs to leave the train platform (thank god the train from La Spezia had still been working) she had to give her friend credit.

A gentle incline of cobbled street led them down to the water. Apartments towered on either side, their ground levels filled with quaint restaurants sporting red and white checked table clothes, interspersed with touristy shops selling everything from post cards to delicate hand painted china. Eva couldn’t focus, her eyes darting about trying to capture every last second. Her exhaustion slipped away, like taking off a heavy coat. She sucked in a deep breath, filling her lungs with salty air, a genuine smile plastered onto her face.

A breeze tussled her shoulder length dark hair, flinging it across her eyes. She hooked it back behind her ear with a finger, just as they reached the base of the hill which opened out into the bay. She stopped, stunned at the view before her. Brightly coloured boats bobbled like candy in the water. Seagulls squawked overhead; their size large compared to what she was used to. A cat scrambled up onto an overturned vibrant blue boat, sitting to lick its paw only to be knocked off its perch by another cat who came flying up behind it.

She glanced behind her towards the mountains, vibrant hues of pink and purple dancing around the golden globe that was painful to look at yet strangely hypnotising. Wafts of rich tomato and freshly caught fish beckoned to her empty stomach, setting it quivering in delight.

Her friends had forged ahead, and she could see both of them had
