Jayne Kingsley

Jayne Kingsley writes contemporary romance filled with fashionable and fun heroines and hunky heroes. She holds a Bachelor of Design – Fashion and Textiles and spent 12 years working in the Fashion industry before hanging up her stilettos (temporarily) for life as a mum. She currently resides on the picturesque south coast of NSW with her two young daughters and her own real-life gorgeous hero. Jayne’s hobbies include drinking coffee and wine, depending on the time of day, and adding shoes to her already ridiculously large collection. She spends her days working as personal slave to her two delightful girls (and writing happily ever afters when allowed).

The boat rocked pitching Sam forward. Flinging her arms wide to steady herself, she probably looked like she was attempting to surf. Why the hell did I agree to wear heels?

Her gaze took in the scene before her: an abundance of glamorous and glittery people, laughing and smiling in groups.

    And here she was. Alone.

Sidestepping to the edge, she gripped the railing hoping to find a sense of stability on the outside, if not the inside. That boat had sailed in every sense of the word.

The sleek lines and vast size of the boat pushed it into super yacht territory. If she’d known anyone on board, they could have started a discussion around the differences. But Samantha Hunt didn’t know a living soul on this boat … yacht … ship?

    Hell, who cares?

She also didn’t have the guts to approach any of the people surrounding her.

A waiter headed her way, and she offered a hopeful smile. He reached her and breezed past as though she didn’t exist.

Wait! she half-choked, sounding like one of the wounded animals she cared for.

The waiter paused, giving a short huff. Snatching the last glass of champagne off his tray, Sam offered a murmur of thanks. The waiter barely raised a brow before he continued his strut to wherever else he deemed more important.

Well, if that doesn’t say I don’t fit in here, I don’t know what does.

Sam glanced at her heels. They were sparkly black with straps across her toes and looping up to her ankle. They weren’t even that high-heeled compared to what else was on display. Her dress was also black and though it reached her knees, the clingy shape far more revealing than she was used to. The sleeveless design and low back were helping her stay cool in the balmy heat. If the dress wasn’t coated in bling, she’d probably be able to wear it to a funeral.

    Don’t go there, Sam.

She took a large slug of the champagne, wincing at the acidic bubbles as they attacked her throat. Was that a flower floating in the bottom of her glass? Give her a six-pack on her back porch over this any day. Her sigh was audible.

But a deal was a deal.

Kieran, her second-in-command at the volunteer rural fire station, had nominated her for one of the elusive golden tickets, for good deeds done. She’d laughed at him – stupidly – but had agreed to attend if she was lucky enough to be selected.

She’d been so sure she wouldn’t be.

Kieran’s grin last week when he’d produced the golden ticket had brought her tummy to a soft boil, which was yet to settle. The entire gang had gotten together, planned her outfit and even chipped in for her to stay an extra night on top of the one included in the prize, in some fancy Sydney hotel. Every single one of her mates had refused to come along as her plus one, insisting it was time she got
