About this ebook

★★★★★  "I have never read a mystery with the main perspective being the cat's! I loved it. The mystery itself was a good one, credible and suspenseful. But the cat was the hero of the book for me in more ways than one. This quirky way to tell a story really added a sense of fun to the book. Loved it, loved it, loved it!" (Louise Gray, Reviewer NetGalley & Goodreads.com)

Would You Like to Help Out?

    Chapter 1

THE EVENING AIR TANTALIZED my nostrils. The neighbor’s small mixed breed barked and barked from behind the backyard fence.

    Stupid dog, I thought.

He leaped against the chain-link fence, bounding up and down. I sat on the bedroom windowsill, keeping an eye on him and the neighborhood. Some birds flew by so near they rustled the sheer curtain behind me.

    A little closer, I meowed.

They chirped and soared away. The sun peaked on the horizon. Darkness loomed.

Lisa threw open the bedroom door with a bang. I jumped up and set my claws into the window screen. I turned. She marched in, her iPhone pressed to her right ear. Her left arm flailed as she spoke. Her face red.

We’ll have to kill him, she said. Are you still in? You’re not backing out on me, Bruce? Are you? I need you on this. We can only be together if you’re in. Are you in? She paused.

Her hand set on her left hip. Her white lips parted and she smiled. Her foot padded the beige carpet.

Good...What?...Why?...Do I have to keep reminding you? Because of his bank account. I want that money...Right, we need that money. I got him to put me in his will and sole beneficiary of the $260,000.00 he’s saved up. I convinced Jamie to make me the sole heir, not that waste of human flesh daughter of his. She never liked me.

She wants to murder Jamie–my human. Good God, what can I do? I thought.

Besides, he told me not to tell her until we got married. A husband’s money should go to his wife and only his wife...Yeah, he still thinks I’m going to marry him. I’d kill him if I married him. Oh wait a minute, I will kill him anyway. I can’t stand him.

    And I can’t stand you.

He deserves to die...Why? He just does. What a dumb question. If you weren’t so cute, I might have dumped you...No, I’m not going to breakup with you. Lisa said and mouthed, Not yet, anyway.

I turned and peered through the white drapes.

That witch wants to kill my owner, my human. I love Jamie. I love to cuddle with him and rub his leg. I don’t know what to do.

    I shook my head.

What was that? Was someone watching and listening? Lisa said, turning her eyes to the window. There’s someone watching me through the window. They could have heard me. Oh, God. What are we going to do if we get caught? I’ll deal with them. That’s for sure.

She ripped the curtain aside. Her breathing rapid and her eyes wide and full of rage.

    Who’s there? she asked.

With my back arched and fur standing up, I hissed. My paw darted out, scratched her arm. She yanked her hand back and drew away. A shriek escaped her mouth.

It’s that cat of Jamie’s–Scottie. I hate that cat.

Lisa clasped her bloody wound and dropped her cellphone. She swore and picked it up.

He cut me...That Tabby of his. I’m going to be so happy when I kill him...and Tanzy, too. I swear they’re all going down...Dead.

I dropped onto the bed and scurried beneath the box spring. I growled. My heart raced. Her feet and ankles were beside the bed. I reached out with my claws and swiped them. I connected again, and she screamed. She dashed away from the bed and up against the dresser. Out of the room, she hurried.

    I’ll get you, cat.

Lisa returned and knelt down beside the bed. She now wore gloves. Looking under, she said, There you are, you rotten feline.

She brought down a wooden spoon and swung it toward me. She missed. I swatted and connected, drawing more blood. This time on her wrist, not covered by the glove. Even though I was enraged, it also delighted me. She got several cat-inflicted wounds.

Pulling her hand back, Lisa sucked in a breath through her teeth.

You better hide, cat. I will get you. Jamie always showed his cats more love than me. Always kissing and hugging them all day and night. He loved them more than me... Yes, he showed more love to them than me.

    With excellent reason, I thought.

Meanwhile, I was lucky if I got a touch on the bum. He always put his cats first, worrying about them all the time. We couldn’t go on vacation unless we took the cats with us. He wouldn’t leave them home alone or get a pet sitter. ‘I don’t trust anybody else with my fur babies,’ he’d say. Good God, I hate these cats...

Yeah, we don’t like you either, I said, but it only came out as a meow.

    Shut up, Scottie.

The witch stomped on the floor and kicked the bed. The sound of it echoed beneath the box spring.

You know what I do to them when Jamie’s not home? I spit on them. And I use the squirt bottle, spraying them in the face. Not when they’re bad but for fun. I love watching them run.

    She laughed.

    I hate that bottle.

Did you get the arsenic, Bruce?...Good.

She snapped her fingers and grinned.

I’m making chili tomorrow night for supper. I’ll give him enough to kill a rhino... She paused and her brow furrowed. No, I don’t think the cops will find out.

    Lisa rolled her eyes.

We’ll get rid of the evidence and be each other’s alibi. We can say he was depressed and killed himself. You know, make it look like he wanted to die...Yeah, excellent idea. He kills his cats too–murder/suicide–kinda.

    Her hand smacked her leg.

I love it...Yes, we kill him first, then he can’t stop us from taking out his mangy pains on my rear end, she said.

I growled even though my mouth was dry.

"Did you wear a disguise to buy the poison?...A baseball cap and a fake beard?...Good. There’re cameras everywhere.  We don’t want someone identifying you. We’ve got to watch our step. ‘Murder is easy,’ they say. Getting away with it is more complicated...Bring it over tomorrow. Jamie’s gonna be home soon from work, and I have to put on my happy face. Do not tell anyone about this because they will go to the police. Got it?...Great. Bye."

Her cellphone beeped. She stood still for a few moments.

Ha, she said and slammed her right foot on the carpet. The floor vibrated through my paws. She bent down and eyed me sideways. She smirked. Her palm hit her chest and rested on the rug.

I hissed and spit at her.

"You lousy cat. I can’t wait till you’re gone. Or maybe I should kill you now and then the terrible one–Tanzy. Make it look like an
