My Hundred-Dollar Horse - Laurie Berkey Vance

Would you like to have a horse someday, Sissy?

As we walked to feed the Forest Service horses in the evenings, my dad would often ask me this question. He and my mom knew how much I wished and hoped for my own horse.

I dreamed about how it might feel to have the wind blow on my face as I loped a horse across tall, green-grassed fields. When I talked about my dream, my mom, knowing that we did not have a lot of extra money, told me to pray for a hundred-dollar horse. So at night, during bedtime prayers, I would ask God for a hundred-dollar horse.

My dad was a district ranger for the US Forest Service. Along with taking care of the Forest Service horses, he had his own pretty black horse named Tony. My father let me sit on Tony’s back many times, but no matter how hard I tried to coax him to giddy-up, he wouldn’t move a muscle. Tony wasn’t mean; he just simply didn’t want to be bothered with a short-legged kid! My dad always had a little smile that he tried to hide, but I was anything but smiling. Tony would be no help in making my dream come true. I’d usually end up crying as I slid off the stubborn horse’s back.
