‘As long as we were back by dark…’

IT'S all just been great fun. Being with my mates and jumping was all I wanted to do, and I got away with it. I've been very lucky.

My mother used to pointto-point and when my brothers and I were growing up, she would beg, borrow or steal – that's probably the wrong word – ponies from local dealers. We didn't have hats or body protectors, we just did what we wanted. It was much more fun.

I remember being led round “bottomhole jumping” by my brother and I fell off and started crying. My brother was crying because we hadn't won and my mother cried because it was so disgraceful! She said, “You'll have to learn to ride”.
