    T wo babies? That’s twice the poop. Courtney paused from setting out miniature cupcakes in order to fully contemplate the enormous diaper bill that comes with twins. Her face creased in disgust, no doubt filled with images of dancing, gross diapers.

    You sure are a romantic. You hear twins and the first thing you think of is bodily functions. Sonali shook her head at her blonde friend.

    Bodily functions are the first thing I think about when it comes to babies in general. They don’t do much else besides make waste and gurgle. You know babies aren’t my thing, Courtney responded, grabbing the last yellow frosted cupcake to munch on.

    So you say. You also said that about love, and here you are nearly six months smitten with your Clint. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

    Courtney refused to meet Sonali’s eyes, instead looking around at the dining room’s decorations. Everything had been done up in pastel pink and yellow, celebrating the impending arrival of their mutual friend Emily’s twin girls. Pink balloons loomed overhead, yellow ribbons fluttered around a huge pile of tightly wrapped presents, and eggs painted with pink polka dots sat in a bowl at the center of the dining room table. It was Easter week, and a fitting time to celebrate fertility, Sonali had declared when her friends first started planning the baby shower for Emily.

    You know, it may happen to you, Sonali continued, finishing her final prep and settling into one of the dining room chairs.

    What will?

    Baby fever.

    Courtney rolled her eyes and licked the last of the cupcake icing off her fingers. I’ll get married and have babies when you do, she replied at last, with an arched perfectly-sculpted eyebrow.

    Sonali’s chest constricted with a jealous pang. Courtney had never been one to want a traditional family or relationship, and yet she had recently found a love-filled life with her partner Clint. Sonali did want to find
