Introduction
I can’t wait to go to the restaurant,
Caithlin, age ten and a half, said as her family’s garage door opened. It was Sunday afternoon and the Ross family had just returned home from Mass.
Yep,
replied Caithlin’s twelve-year-old brother, Adam, laconically. The children rushed inside the house and changed into casual clothes.
Mom walked into the kitchen from the hallway and questioned cheerfully, Are we ready to head to the restaurant?
Yep, we’re all set!
Adam said and clasped his hands. I’m sooo ready to eat!
Eat? I can eat anytime! Hey, whatcha guys doin’?
barked Bailey as he stared up at Adam. Bailey was the Rosses’ youngest German Shepherd. He had his tongue sticking out the side of his mouth.
Hey, Bailey,
Adam cooed as he squatted down and petted Bailey’s soft tan ears. Hey, buddy!
He scratched Bailey’s left black eyebrow. The other eyebrow was tan.
I can’t wait!
Caithlin said happily, wide-eyed, as she squirmed. I made Ella some rose perfume out of my potions!
Great, honey,
Mom said to Caithlin, and put her hands on top of her son’s shoulders.
No, I think your cologne-making days are over,
Adam said. Mom, please tell her not to bring it.
Hey! Where’re you guys going? On a trip? Are you bringing me; are you bringing my mom? thought Bailey as he tilted his head while he watched his kids walk toward the computer room.
Hey, son, what are you up to?
Leese asked her son, her nails tapping on the hard, shiny cherry-wood floor. Bailey and Leese had lived in the woods until the kids had taken them in. Amazingly, one day, Caithlin and Adam had found a magic wolf tooth on a family camping trip that temporarily turned their dogs into wolves. Only Caithlin, Adam, and their good friend, Ella, knew the secret.
The kids are leaving us,
Bailey said worriedly in a soft tone.
Don’t worry about it, Bailey,
Leese reassured.
Adam noticed Leese and scratched the back of her soft tan ears, then patted the black spot on the back of Leese’s head. She was taller and her coat was rougher than Bailey’s. Leese was also calmer and more serious than Bailey.
Hey, Dad? Are you ready?
Adam called to Dad, who was in the computer room.
Yep, just a second. I have to grab a cup of coffee for the road,
Dad replied. Adam looked at his father. His dad’s brown hair was scarce, so he usually shaved his head. He was super tall and thin, and most people thought he was handsome.
Awesome!
Adam said as Caithlin squealed and Mom laughed.
Your dad sure loves his coffee,
Mom said with a roll of her eyes. She quickly kissed Dad on the cheek.
Caithlin and Adam would NEVER have guessed that their trip to the restaurant would lead to the most unbelievable experience any child could have.
Chapter 1
Old-Fashioned Fun
The Ross family entered a fancy restaurant that they had been invited to by the owner. Mom and Dad smiled at each other. They inhaled the smell of fresh roses as they linked arms. They stood still and gasped. Adam and Caithlin, on the other hand, searched the room excitedly for their friend, Ella Brooks.
Whoa! I’ve never seen a restaurant quite like this before,
Mom laughed, referring to the chandelier above them and the greeter in a pressed shirt, vest, and bow tie.
Mom had honey-colored hair, the same color as Caithlin’s, but Mom’s was short and straight with pieces of brunette.
Thank you for coming!
thirteen-year-old Ella giggled, her long, soft butter-blond curls bouncing on and off her chest. The sleeves of Ella’s crinkly orange and bright pink plaid shirt were rolled up. Her movements were graceful and gentle. She had a voice to match—it was soft.
Holy drive-thru!
Adam exclaimed, his pickle-green eyes wide.
Adam’s expression holy drive-thru
had become a family joke. One day, the family had gone through a drive-thru at McDonald’s. Adam had ordered six chicken nuggets, but instead when he opened the bag Dad had handed to him in the backseat, there were twenty chicken nuggets! Adam had screamed out, Holy drive-thru, that’s a lot of nuggets in here!
Now, Adam always said holy drive-thru
when he was excited or shocked about something.
Yeah!
Caithlin agreed as she gaped. She saw the waitresses fly in and out of the kitchen in their lacy old-fashioned cotton dresses. One waitress seemed to go into the kitchen as one waiter seemed to come out. The waiters were in suits as they walked around looking serious. It feels like we’re really in the olden days! Cool!
Caithlin continued and beamed as Dad got handed a large menu. Caithlin launched her hands in air and looked up. Her eyes were wide and wild. She let out a loud pleasant laugh and her dimples showed. Caithlin’s braces glimmered, and
