As a kid, Tyler H. Jolley always had a knack for storytelling. When he grew bored of old fables, he created his own exciting and unique worlds. Many years later, he still had so many new ideas and stories swirling in his head, but with nowhere to share it. That’s when he put his pencil to paper and let the creative juices flow. His breakthrough novel, EXTRACTED, came out in 2013 and swiftly became an Amazon Best Seller and Spencer Hill Press Best Seller. Since then, Tyler has been busy publishing over a dozen books. He reexamined the publishing process and created an efficient way to get his countless ideas into print. Tyler definitely didn’t like to work alone, so he restructured his writing methods into a team approach. When he’s not writing, you can find him at his orthodontic practice, mountain biking, or on the hunt for the perfect doughnut. Chapter 1
Alison Liv Isner plopped onto the Persian rug in the storage room of Field and Excavation Inc., her father’s archeological store. Weeks had passed and she still hadn’t been beckoned for another adventure with her best friends. Ali closed her eyes and imagined being whisked away into a foreign land and reuniting with her friends—friends who happened to be animals that talked. She’d been on three expeditions and felt like a pro these days, though she still hadn’t figured out how to trigger the next adventure.
Chicaletta had told her in Egypt that the adventure needed to be ready for her, not the other way around. The giant golden lion tamarin was wise, even if Ali didn’t always like her answers. So instead of feeling sorry for herself, she studied her mom’s journal. For her last adventure, in Transylvania, she hadn’t been prepared, and she wasn’t going to let that happen again. She’d even made it to the end of the journal, where landscapes had been mapped out, but it was unclear what artifact was to be saved.
I’m ready if you are.
Ali’s chin rested on her palm, her elbow on the ledger desk. She spun the pale-brown globe lazily for the third time today. A rustle behind her turned her attention to the curtain that separated her living space from the storage room.
What are you up to, squirt?
Tommy asked. Got your nose buried in a book again?
I sure do.
Ali stood and turned toward him. I thought you weren’t working today.
I figured I’d work for a bit.
Tommy bit back a smile. Field and Excavation Inc. can’t run without me.
Very funny.
Ali rolled her eyes.
My parents said they’d meet me here. I thought I could put in a few more hours since Mr. Isner was nice enough to give me some time off.
I bet you’re excited to see them.
Ali walked out of the storage room and toward the storefront.
Yeah.
He followed Ali. It will be great. It was weird not being with them for Thanksgiving.
Tommy lived in the back of the store, on the opposite side of Ali and her dad’s living quarters. His parents were farmers forty miles out of town. He rarely saw them, save for holidays and special occasions, especially now that his coursework had become more difficult in his sophomore year. Determined to be the first person in his family to graduate high school, Tommy spent all his free time studying.
Guess you’ll have to help out your old man while I’m off,
Tommy teased.
A jingle from the front door interrupted their conversation.
Duty calls.
Tommy walked away, whistling a familiar tune.
Ali wandered to the front of the store, bored and discouraged. There was no archery practice today, and she didn’t have homework since school was out for Christmas. She saw her dad crouched by a shelf, arranging some merchandise.
Hey Dad,
Ali said. I think Tommy’s parents just arrived.
It’ll be good for him to see them.
He didn’t turn around and continued shuffling the items around. They sure are proud of him. He’s a good boy. Although I’m sure they could use his help on the farm.
Not much to farm with the Dust Bowl.
He nodded.
The severe drought was devastating to so many. Though for Ali, it was nothing in comparison to just a few years ago when her mom died—the same year of the stock market crash of 1929. Life hadn’t been easy since then, but she still had her dad and her mom’s memories tucked away in an old adventure journal.
Dad.
Ali reached into
