    An English Lesson

    Dep was in an English lesson with his teacher, Ms Dragon. As usual, he was daydreaming about his animal friends at the City Zoo. He dreamt about Mona the monkey, Little the crocodile, Zelda the zebra, and many more animals that filled his mind. He recalled fondly the time when he and Para, the clever parrot, rescued a rare frog from the claws of an evil poacher! Yes, those were happy days indeed!

    Mum and Dad complained all too often, much to Dep’s annoyance, that he should spend more time with human friends. However, Dep did not care. He was happier with his animal friends.

    Dep! roared Ms Dragon.

    Dep started and his mind fell back into his body with a painful judder.

    Listen children, I want all of you to enter a super new competition with FABULOUS prizes. I am so excited and I know that you will be as excited as I am when I reveal the prizes available.

    Ms Dragon continued, "The fourth prize is a painting of your favourite pet by your art teacher, Mr Dart. Jen won this wonderful prize last year.

    Jen, tell the class where the beautiful picture hangs in your home."

    Sorry, Ms Dragon, Mum threw it in the bin.

    Ms Dragon looked mortified. She stuttered, Jen, did your dog not like his picture?

    No, Mum thought it was a doodle by my baby brother.

    After Ms Dragon had recovered emotionally, she continued, The third prize is a free trip to The City Zoo.

    Dep’s eyes lit up at this point. Other children dreamt of being social media influencers and footballers. Their parents dreamt that their delightful offspring would become doctors. However, Dep would have none of this. He dreamt of being a zoo keeper, just like his mum, Rep.

    "Second prize will be a collector’s item, certain to be very valuable when you are grandparents. It is the first copy of ‘Your Favourite Maths Problems’ by your favourite maths teacher, Mr Potty.
