My Song Lyrics - James Goi Jr.
PREFACE
I’m self-taught on the guitar. And I taught myself to sing. So, basically, I learned both from someone who didn’t know anything about either. Point is, I’m not a pro-level guitarist or singer. But I do seem to do both well enough to be able to write and perform my own songs well enough so that people can get an idea of how they might sound under better conditions. More or less.
Other than a couple of flukes years earlier when I was in my mid-twenties, I didn’t start in on my songwriting until 1999 at the age of forty. I recall writing the first three or so songs in just a day or two. It was like they’d just been waiting to be found.
And so here I am, what, about eighteen years later? To this point, I’ve written just over 100 songs. Over the last eighteen years, I’ve grown and changed a bit. Or more. Thing is, a lot of these songs would not be written by me today. I’m not the same person who wrote many of them way back when.
I guess I haven’t been very prolific. I mean, I have written three or four songs over a weekend, but just over 100 songs (fifty in this first volume) over eighteen years only comes out to, what, five and a half songs a year? Less than half a song a month? I consider that a dismal rate of production knowing what I could actually be capable of.
But my life to this point has been what it’s been, and the songs that have come out are the songs that have come out. (And you might be as surprised by some of what has come out as I am. And some are, like, embarrassing maybe? Anyway, I went for it and am putting them out there.)
In my own defense, though, it’s been a long strange trip
and I’m actually amazed when I get anything done. Another thing is, though, that I could likely pick up my guitar right now, start messing around with a few chords, and then boom, dump a song out onto paper and into the recorder.
I know some will read this series of books for the (perceived by me anyway) poetic value and others because they know of my other writings and are just curious about what kind of songs such a writer as me—what with the metaphysics, spirituality, mind power, and all—would write.
And the third type of people I like to imagine will end up reading this series of books are my fellow songwriters and lyricists. Knowing that such people are often interested in other songwriters’ processes, I’ll share a bit of mine. Some songwriters (who indeed come up with both music and lyrics on their own), so I’ve heard, write the music first and add lyrics later. Others write the lyrics first then add in the music (chord progressions, melody, whatever) later on.
And then, I guess, some write the words and music together. At the same time. That’s me. That third one. Can’t recall ever having not done it that way, with this exception: some of my songs share the same exact music with another of my songs. Some, such as Life’s What Happens have the same title: Life’s What Happens (Version 1) and Life’s What Happens (Version 2).
Others, such as Lady Oh Lady and Fire and Ice, are completely different songs wordwise, but share the same exact chord progressions and melodies. Weird, right? Anyway, the way that’s come about is that I’ve written a song then sometime after sat down and played the same chords and sang the same melody but only this time with mostly new words (in the case of a second version) or all new words (in the case of a completely new story or message). I don’t know why I do it. It just sort of happens, I guess. Perhaps I just get bored with the first version of a song.
How long does it take me to write a song? The short answer is, not long. Oh wait, there was that one song. It was one of my early ones, and I recall working on it over multiple sessions. But other than that, I’ve written most of my songs in one session. I’ll just guess and say from half an hour, maybe less, to an hour or two, maybe more. I really don’t know. Never thought to time it. I do, though, often end up doing a few word-tweaking sessions during subsequent days.
I could write more along these lines, but I won’t. This preface will appear in Volumes 1 and 2 of this series, as they are being published at, basically, the same time. Enjoy...
