As the definitions of herein mentioned biological terms are mostly jargon, and therefore should be exact and precise for scoring marks in the G.C.E. ALs examination held by the department of examinations, most definitions have been extracted from the resource books introduced by the national institute of education and some have been narrated in order to include all points stated in the resource books, required for the said definition.

The national institute of education holds the copyrights for the biology resource books and this book is mostly a collection of the definitions appearing throughout the G.C.E. ALs biology syllabus so that it will be easier for the students to memorize the precise content (definitions) and no infringement of copyrights is intended.

We are forever grateful for all the individuals involved of the national institute of education in their success in bringing the resource books for the students.

PREFACE

Dear brothers and sisters, it is with great pleasure that I’m presenting you this book  Biology Definitions eHandbook for those of you who are sitting for the G.C.E. ALs examination in the biology stream. As you all know, the syllabus changed in 2017 and the first AL examination under the newly implemented syllabus was held in 2019. Within this new syllabus implementation, resource books were introduced by the National Institute of Education. As a student who faced the ALs under the newly implemented syllabus in 2019, I found these resource books quite valuable.

Most people are of the notion that biology is just a matter of how well a student can memorize, but in reality, the study of biology requires a firm understanding and a sound knowledge of the subject content. As long as you understand a certain process or a certain structure for example, you can very well describe it according to the question and guide yourself towards a proper answer.

A place in biology, where the memorizing capacity comes into play are most importantly, the ‘definitions’. A definition is defined as, ‘A statement of the meaning of a term’. Therefore a ‘definition’ must be accurate and cannot be changed, so therefore should be memorized while obtaining a proper understanding of the term. Along with the introduction of the resource books, I believe that the ‘definitions’ for the vast number of biological terms appearing throughout the ALs biology syllabus are now much more definite.

‘Definitions’ are mostly directly tested in the structured essay paper as What is type questions. While answering those, if memorized well, these ‘definitions’ can also be used very effectively as a starter for most essay type questions. Proper memorization along with a sound understanding will also be very beneficial for you to arrive at the correct MCQ answers too within a short period.

When analyzing the past papers of Biology G.C.E. ALs, the trend shows an increase in the number of ‘definitions’ that comes useful for a student in both the structured essay and essay papers.

So in this book, I have collected all the terms appearing in the G.C.E. ALs syllabus and the ‘definitions’ have been written with reference from the resource books so that they are very much definite and accurate.
