    Introduction

    A JOURNEY BEGINS

In the winter of 1540, a group of Spanish nobles gathered in New Spain, which is now known as Mexico. The men were about to embark on a journey led by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado. He hoped to find the rich cities of gold that were believed to lie to the north. Coronado’s crew was one of the largest ever sent to explore the Americas. It was made up of more than 300 Spaniards and 1,000 native people. Herds of horses, cattle, pigs, and sheep were also brought along.
