The mine they were looking for was the infamous “Lost McLeod Mine,” made famous by the brothers who discovered it, Willie and Frank McLeod, who were later also found headless. Who were these decapitated men? What caused their deaths? Most importantly, what made the Nahanni Valley so treacherous—a land that terrorized the natives, causing them to live in perpetual fear? As of 1937, according to one old newspaper, “Thirteen men have already disappeared up the foaming Nahanni river that plunges from the unexplored hinterland between the Mackenzie valley and Alaska.
