    Introduction

    THE PASSAGE TO ASIA

In 1607 Henry Hudson began making preparations for the first of his four famous trips of exploration. Hudson was an expert navigator and a skilled sailor. He had been hired by the Muscovy Company in England to locate a quick route to Asia. China and Japan possessed luxury goods, such as spices, silks, jewels, and gold.
