CHAPTER ONE
Surprises
Imagine the surprise when Europeans and American Indians first met on the shores of the Americas more than 500 years ago. From the late 1400s into the early 1600s, many explorers crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Europe. As explorers arrived, many American Indian tribes experienced the shock of seeing strange men enter their harbors. The strangers traveled on huge brown wooden boats with large sails. Some tribes described the boats as floating islands. The strangers had pale white skin. They dressed in strange, fancy clothing. Strangest of all, they had hair over much of their faces and bodies.
Explorers called the land they reached the New World.
But not all of the American Indian tribes were surprised at seeing these white strangers. Some tribes, such as the Algonquin (al-GONG-kin), had heard prophecies that white men would one day come from the east. Many tribes first welcomed the strange-looking people in their massive boats with a mixture of friendship and awe. A few feared the newcomers and greeted the white men with
