CREATING A
BILL OF RIGHTS
People in the United States have many freedoms. Among them is the freedom of speech. Americans can say whatever is on their minds. They also can worship — or choose not to worship — however they wish. The government does not censor what people read. It also allows a free flow of ideas on television and on the Internet. In addition, people can gather peacefully wherever they want. And if they have concerns, they can petition the government and ask for the issues to be addressed.
Most Americans take these freedoms for granted. The founders of the United States did not. Under British rule, American colonists were not promised these freedoms.
American leaders wrote the Constitution in 1787, four years after the treaty ending the Revolutionary War (1775–1783). The Constitution described how the new nation should be run. But some people
