An Unforgettable Summer. The Release Of Chickens and Other Adventures - A.P. Hernández

    CHAPTER 1

    How boring!

It was noon and the sun was shining angrily in a cloudless sky. Cicadas, hidden somewhere, made their characteristic sounds.

Juan raised the straw of his lemonade to his lips and took a sip.

    How boring! He said again.

Juan was sitting on the porch stairs of his house. He lived in a quiet area where nothing interesting ever happened ever. The only memorable event took place last year, and it was nothing more than the unexpected visit of a squirrel.

The animal ran around his garden for a couple of minutes and then left just as he had come.

    And that's it.

That was the only interesting thing that neighborhood ever saw.

Juan was barefoot and the grass tickled the soles of his feet.

How boring! He told himself once more.

On the opposite sidewalk was Caramelo, the huge Saint Bernard belonging to his neighbor. Earlier, Juan asked Mrs. Martina for permission to play with Caramelo and she gave him her dog for the whole afternoon. It turns out that Caramelo, despite his colossal appearance, was a good guy. And besides, he liked children.

Juan and Caramelo had known each other for four years and in all summers the Saint Bernard had always been willing to play with Juan, happily picking up the balls he threw at him and even allowing him to gallop on his back.

But this summer, Caramelo had decided he didn't feel like playing games. Juan didn't blame him, because the heat was unbearable.

How's it going, big guy? He asked him.

Caramelo was in Mrs. Martina's garden, lying under the shade of a pine tree and with his tongue spread out on the grass.

Of course, the dog ignored him, as he was enjoying a peaceful nap.

Perro, Animales, Mascota, Rescate, Saint Bernard

Juan brought the lemonade back to his mouth and drank what was left. He thought that summer was ending, he thought that in less than two weeks the school classes would begin and, above all, he thought that he had not done anything interesting yet.

In almost two months on vacation, he hadn't done a single thing on his list.

Juan reached into the pocket of his shorts and took out the paper that had been folded so lovingly. He always carried the list with him, never separated from it.

Carefully, he unfolded it and re-read all those things that he had proposed almost two months ago:

    THINGS TO DO THIS SUMMER

    1. Go to the beach and get in a boat.

    2. Feed a lion.

    3. Build a garden pool.

    4. Meet an alien.

    5. Dig up a pirate treasure.

    6. Live great adventures.

    Maybe Juan was too ambitious.

Maybe he should have put simpler things on his list, more easily attainable goals, like drinking lemonade, reading a book, or playing with Caramelo.

Of all the things on his list, the only one he tried to do was the third: build a pool in the garden.

Juan began to make a very large hole, but when his mother caught him, she became furious and forced him to cover it and leave everything as it was.

How boring! He said to himself again.

Inside, Juan felt great frustration. Before summer began, I had big plans for summer, and yet I had accomplished nothing. His parents were always working, so he was home alone, bored, with no one to play
