    Under the radiant sun of summer, Augustine Guillomet, sixty-five, opened her large parasol to protect as best as possible the watercolors and graphite portraits exposed at her stand.

    She had decided to hang some of them from a bamboo screen, its three parts slightly folded for a nice style effect. Others were presented on wood easels, while the rest were arranged here and there on a rush beach mat. She had also prepared a series of diverse paintings, placed in a wicker basket, to hopefully fill the empty spaces left by sold works.

    Sporting a pretty straw hat sprinkled with flowers, the retired artist-painter turned around and politely responded to her nearest neighbor’s courtesy nod. More than twenty exposers got together to present their work along the canal that goes through downtown Perpignan. Most of them were used to that annual gathering, organized for the fifth year with the goal of putting forward the region’s sculptures and painters. But for Augustine Guillomet, this was her first time. Not very comfortable with the idea of showing her works to the public, she had accepted the invitation under the pressure of a friend who was convinced of her talent. Considering her small pension, she also saw an opportunity to make a little money,
